Thought i might ask the question! I would love to be able to converse, share ideas and tips, and in general hang out with some whistlers. Is it possible, can it be done, if not then, thats OK too. Just an idea.
I would love some feedback from this, if its not being too pushy.
It was tried once.
It rarely had more than one person in it. I tried about 15 times and only found Mack there once. Dale even tried to schedule chat sessions at certain times. I usually got the e-mail notice after the session ended. Dale discontinued after nobody wanted to have it maintained. That was when there were about 2200 fipplers. Not a real big difference from the 2800+ we have now.
The message board serves most of the functions as a chat room (from the communication side) but is much more clunkey. I think when the number of subscribers reaches something like 5000, we might reach the critical mass necessary to make a chat room fun.
It was kind-of hit or miss. Occasionally we had a number of folks in the chat room. The Chat room had a few technical difficulties and folks seem to have moved to ICQ and other ad hoc chat opportunities. If you check the member list, you’ll see some folks include additional contact channels other than just e-mail.
I can run a nice CGI based chat server from my home PC.
I have a cable connection, so it has always ran smoothly whenever I have done it.
If there’s a real interest in it, I’d be happy to give it a trial run and see how well it goes… it doesn’t take me long to set it up.
I used it as a gathering place for my old gaming buddies… back when I was addicted to Quake instead of whistles.
If all goes well with it, it would be no problem for Rich to move it to a permanant and more reliable server.
Just let me know…
I think it would be wizard to have a chat room. The thing about a message board is that it can take a while for getting replies, as with a chat room, it’s instant - I think it’s a good idea!

I haven’t posted my ICQ etc info because I always get spammers in the mix.
What would be a nice feature is if there were a new icon showing if someone is logged in or not, with some sort of notification button if you want to chat with the person. I don’t know how hard that would be, though.
Avanutria,
Actually there is a way to find out who’s logged in. If you go to the Forum Index and click on the “Currently Browsing” link you’ll get a list of who’s logged in. Mostly it folks listed as “guest” but as soon as the make a post or actually log-in. There name appears.
For example while I’m making this post ErikT, Constance and several guests are logged in browsing the forums.

Ok, I have created a channel on irc.rhizomatic.net, called #chiffy. Come on in! Rich and I are usually around on rhizomatic, so come on in, anyone who’s interested. I have an infobot running as well, I can pop her on the channel as well.
oh yeah, you need an IRC client to get on. I am assuming that you know about getting one for your operating system and all. you can find a lot of information about IRC, clients for it, and general etiquette at http://www.irchelp.org.
If you’re more of an advanced windows user, there’s also xchat for windows at http://www.xchat.org, but I’m not sure how stable that is.
So get a client (there are more out there, you can check out a site like http://www.nonags.com for windows clients, http://www.macorchard.com for mac clients, just search for IRC clients), download it, install it, put in all your personal information, etc.
For the server, you want to enter irc.rhizomatic.net. Once you’ve connected to the server, you type “join #chiffy”, and your client should hook you up to the channel.
I hope this helps. =)
