What magic trick do I have to perform to be able to chat?
Do I need to download something?
I was up late last night and tried to communicate with the crystal people… I felt so left out… I even think they were talking about me. Something to tune of the blue box blues…
Yup, that’s all I could see.
NO DIALOG!
I’ve never used the chat room before but I just tried it. I just clicked the New! Chat at the top of the page. I was asked for a nickname and then was transferred to the chat page. That’s about it.

I had the same problem and had someone walk me through it (although you may want to rethink entering the chat room once you get there - it’s a very strange world indeed). You need to download mIRC (which you can install from http://www.mirc.com ). Once you’ve done that, in the space “IRC Network” type in #Chiffy and then press “add.” If it asks you for passwords, etc. just ignore it. In the space below that type in binky.phreeow.net and “add”. (I’m hoping this is right - it’s been a month or so since I had to do it). Close everything. Now when you click on your mIRC icon on your desktop you’ll get an “mIRC Options” window with a button that says “Connect to IRC Server” - click that. Next you’ll get a window with “mIRC Channels FOlder” and (hopefully) #chiffy has been added. Highlight that and click on “Join.” That should take you into the chat room and a whole new weird direction in your life.
Now, all that said, I may have missed a step or something, so do what I did: PANIC. No, go into the chatroom (even if you can’t see anything) and type in HELP - we should be able to see you even if you can’t see us. Then give your email address and somebody will try to help walk you through this. Hope this will help.

Well, I was just in the chat room talking to someone and all I had to do was enter an acceptable nickname. That was it.

Those who are blessed by the Crystal People just have to click on NEW! Chat. But the rest of us have to go through the above machinations. 
Once it’s set up it’s pretty quick, though.
(There are several of us who’ve had to do it this way.)

Try using a different browser if you want to use the New! Chat link rather than muck about with a IRC client. Netscape 7.0 should do the trick.
Roy - we can see you trying to get into chat. If you’ll type in your email address we can give you some help.

I am currently running off Internet Explorer.
Before I change browsers. What ‘mayhem’ can I expect?
I am thus far happy with Internet Explorer. No complaints as of yet. Is it worth it to chat?
No. 
Just kidding. Read the “Can I be Newbie #3” thread and I think you’ll get the idea. (I think roycustomknives finally got into the chat room using the mIRC last night, so it is possible.)

Ok, I did it!
Now What.
On the The IRC Network where I am supposed to type in #Chiffy has only a set IRC Network listing. And #Chiffy is not in those settings.
Am I in the wrong place?

You should be able to type in #Chiffy and click on “Add”.

FWIW, I am NOT using Netscape but Internet Explorer 6.0.whatever.
I have NOT DL’d or loaded mIRC and it is not on this PC. The NEW!Chat link at the top of the page is all I ever use to get in.
