#chiffy on irc.rhizomatic.net -- chat channel

ok, I posted this information on the other topic, but I thought maybe it would be worth putting in a topic of its own so people would know it’s there.

I’ve started a chat channel for chiff & fipplers on irc.rhizomatic.net, #chiffy. Here’s some info about accessing it.

okey doke, well, there are a lot of clients out there, but here are some basics.

If you’re running Windows 9x/2000, you can get mIRC http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/mirc/

If you’re running a Mac, I suggest ircle http://www.ircle.com/ or snak http://www.snak.com/Snak.html.

If you’re running a Unix box, I suggest xchat http://www.xchat.org/, ircii http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/ircii/.

If you’re more of an advanced windows user, there’s also xchat for windows at http://www.xchat.org, but I’m not sure how stable that is.

So get a client (there are more out there, you can check out a site like http://www.nonags.com for windows clients, http://www.macorchard.com for mac clients, just search for IRC clients), download it, install it, put in all your personal information, etc.

For the server, you want to enter irc.rhizomatic.net. Once you’ve connected to the server, you type “join #chiffy”, and your client should hook you up to the channel.

I hope this helps. =)

does the win95/98/00 work on windows NT? I know some stuff that works on other versions does horrible, horrible things to NT..

Yep, apparently it can, according to http://www.mirc.com/get.html (NT is listed specifically in the list). it’s a program that’s been around a long long time (it’s in version 5.91 I think), and they are still working on it. I think you can be pretty certain of it. I run a mac client myself.

I tried this last night, it only took a few minutes to download/install the software and point it to Stimp’s IRC channel.
Now I have another way to waste time when i should be working/practicing/whatever.
Thanks Stimps!

hey, I’m glad to be of help with timewasting all the world over! =D

well, a few people have shown up on the channel, but everyone seems to pop on for two minutes and then leaves. =) I guess everyone has dialup or something… I usually just leave my irc client connected because I have ADSL. Anyway, if people don’t find anyone active on #chiffy they can always try #tempura, it’s another channel on the network where rich and I tend to hang out.

Spent some time on the chat tonight. It’s pretty neat. We’ll have to plan a time to get together this weekend.

I was just on, this could be a very cool thing indeed! Some scheduled meetings would be a good thing. God bless the internet!!

Ok…I think I’m in it but I’m not sure…Does it show a list of who all is in there anywhere?

Brent

Brent,
I’m there now.
you’re not.
I’ll be in it all day.
Good luck,
jb

Most(all) irc clients show who is on at any given time. It should also have two windows, one for the chat session, and one for status messages from the server. see if you can check the server window for clues as to why you’re not in.

I have another question…What exactly do I type? Do I type “join #chiffy” or do i type “#chiffy”? Somebody please help me!

Brent

first I just typed irc.rhizomatic.net and got into an empty room–then I typed irc.rhizomatic.net#chiffy and got into another empty room–so I don’t know if I was in the right place at the wrong time . . . at about 2:00 pm today . . .

I don’t understand how to find irc.rhizomatic.net–I am using Mirc–I see lists but no rhizo…

This is how I did it…when I got the mIRC options pop up, this gives you a list of servers, click add and enter the irc.schitzo or whatever it is, I just put “whistle” in the discription line. So now evrytime I log on my server name says whistle. Click OK. Then pull down the channels icon in the tool bar, and click apply. The chiffy room should appear with a bunch of other rooms. At least on my comp it does. Good luck.

It’s not working for me…Or I’m stupid and I’m not doing something right. Probably the latter. Well, could you explain in more detail for idiots like me?

Brent

oops, forgot to click to page two to see my post, duh

I thought I had clicked submit, but here goes again. After launching Mirc, I close the unregistered status window and the options window appears. In the descriptions line I type whistle. In the IRC I type rhizomatic.net. In the group line, #chiffy. After I have established a connection with bullfrog.rhizomatic.net a list of channels appears but no #chiffy in that list so I close it. I click on the list channels button up on the menu bar. In that window I just click get list. There I see #chiffy second to last. I double click that and find mendel, pea, and stimps, so I know I have found the right place. I am totally new to Mirc so I don’t know if everything I did to find the room is right or necessary. . . I will also try #tempura.

#chiffy now no longer appears on the list. I know it is the right list because #tempura still appears there.
