CHAT -- again

I recently got another request for a chiff & fipple chat room. We’ve actually tried chat rooms a few times. Even had Joanie Madden drop in once during a chat.

Most recently, a couple of people set up an IRC room. I think, however, a lot of people are discouraged by IRC because they find it user-unfriendly.

There have been a couple of factors which I think have kept us from having a steady chat presence on the Internet. First, we’ve not been able to settle on a technical approach. IRC has it’s strong proponents, but is technically not simple enough for most people. Web chats seem to cause problems for a lot of people. The other factor is that there hasn’t been enough people use the chats to keep them going. People sign on, nobody’s there, they sign off.

As many of you know, I use yahoogroups.com to manage membership and mailings for c&f. We have a ‘group’ website there at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/chiffandfipple/

From there, there’s a link to a chat client. It seems to work pretty well. But, again, I’m wary of using it because anytime I put something up on yahoogroups.com (polls, etc) there are a lot of people who email me to say they can’t get to the site, or whatever. I’m not sure what the problem is.

I’m going to look for a clean & simple web-based chat. If anyone knows of one, lemme know.

Well, I’m about to go out and party-party-party the year away. Actually, I’m staying home and watching TV.

2001 has sucked a good bit. I’ll be ready to let the old bastard go.

Frankly.

Love,

Dale

Dale,
Amen to your description of 2001. I hope that 2002 will be much better for us all. Happy New Year.
Greg

I agree this year absolutly stank out loud. Both on a global and personal level. If 2002 doesn’t turn out any better than 2001, I’m moving way up into the mountains and becoming a hermit…

<A HREF=http://www.ralfchat.com">Ralf’s Chat would probably suit our needs quite well… I know of no other free chat script with as many nice features.

I think I’ll go with Telegram Sam. And we’ll be hermits…together.

Well, I guess that would defeat the whole purpose, wouldn’t it?

Dale

Well, why didn’t you say so?

I’d like to hear what people think about the chat interface at

http://chiffboard.mati.ca/chat/

I’ve just sort of thrown it up there, so there may indeed be some unpolished edges,
and it can’t address the “no-one’s around” problem, but it’s the best I could come
up with that doesn’t require either java or money.

Despite that official-looking URL, it’s entirely unofficial, at least for the time being. I’ll also be poking it with a big stick now and again, so if it doesn’t seem to work at all, let me know and try again later.

Yer faithful webmonkey,

Rich, Rich, I’ll never get used to you. If I were President of the United States, you’d be my…my…I don’t know…SOMETHING.

Let’s put a link to it up at the top of the page.

Thank you.

Dale

http://www.spinchat.com/ has a very nice user interface. Their servers are usually quite fast, even in crowded rooms.

Looks interesting. I haven’t run into anyone yet, but I’ll keep looking now and again.

Dale, Rich

It isn’t beautifull but I just finished talking to EricT and JessieK and it is working fine.

Thank you Rich another great feature of this board.
