Anyone tried these learning CD roms? I picked up a few in Ireland this summer, am working through the concertina one. I really like it. They have a variety of instruments taught by top professional musicians. Very cool idea. Comments?
I asked about these on the forum a while back. An archive search reveals that they are very well received. Which others did you get? What do you think of them?
Cheers,
Aaron
Hi Aaron,
Besides the concertina, I picked up the whistle, fiddle and banjo. As an Irish music teacher, I was interested in how they approach teaching these instruments via CDrom. They are all good, although Brian on the whistle video doesnt exactly teach you to do what he does on his CDs!!
I have yet to hear Brian’s playing. everyone on C&F gasps I’ve been wanting to get the flute one. I wonder how Seamus Egan got picked for flute and Brian Finnegan for whistle? Either could do both I’m sure.
Cheers,
Aaron
They have Trad music CD Roms?!?!?!?
How come I haven’t heard of them???
Wow… I’m going to have to invest in one out of curiosity…
Seamus Egan’s Flute tutor is very good. Starts out with basics of how to get embrochure and moves on from there
I’ve got both the whistle and flute tutorials. To me, the flute tutorial is okay, not incredible - okay for the money I guess. You get video clips of Seamus Egan playing beginner-intermediate tunes in a straightforward manner, and it covers most of the flute ornaments. However I think he doesn’t cover embouchure and breathing very well so there will be personal trial and error and etc required for rank beginners and that can be a little disappointing - when you thought you have gotten yourself a complete tutorial. Additionally, I think the glottal stopping explaination in there isn’t very good/accurate. And no it doesn’t really show you stuff that makes Seamus Egan’s playing special, nor does it go beyond intermediate flute (maybe except the ornaments).
Personally I benefited more from Scoiltrad and like them better (when they are having a discount special).
The whistle tutorial on the other hand has a more complete feel to it and has more value if you’re looking for such a tutorial. It does teach you a few less common ornaments that Brian Finnegan would use, like triple tonguing, and some other stuff which I can’t recall.
By the way, one of the less commonly known things about Madfortrad is their FAQ service. Several times I have emailed their FAQ help thingy with regards to elaborations of technique covered in the tutorial and have actually received personal email replies.
