Brian Finnegan CD ROM Tutor

Does anyone have any experience with this CD Rom Tin Whistle Tutor? It looks interesting. I saw it on madfortrad.com.

You may want to do some research before ordering from madfortrad. Start with a search here on chiff & fipple.

It’s also on the Overton-website from Colin, Bernard and Birgit, don’t know if it can be ordered there as well. If so it’s a very good and safe place to order things: http://www.overton.de/texte/zubehoer.html

A guy suggested it to me to give me some ideas on how to teach others whistle better. It teaches rolls and such well, but the best thing it does is give you a couple songs that are well geared towards your instrument (by that I mean songs that are easily made expressive on your instrument). It is, by far, no substitute for listening and playing with musicians, but it has a few perks if your new. If you’re starting, I’d suggest it with hours of listening to go along with it. It’s a bit geared towards Flook-like-new-age playing.

I have that tutorial. It’s a decent collection of tunes and Brain Finnegan is a terrific player. His style is his stlye - lots of tounged triplets. The video segments just present the tunes (relaxed then normal speed) and that may be enough for many people. The dots and comments are available for each tune with sparse suggestions on how to approach the tune. There isn’t any teaching per se in the videos. There is little explanation on the basics of playing. I do enjoy playing along with the videos.

I have several other Mad for Trad CDs and they all follow the same format and some of the tunes are common across the CDs. If you don’t have a teacher locally or you don’t have a session nearby and can’t get out to a workshop then these CDSs may be useful.

These are always for sale on eBay and you can purchase them from these reputable dealers as well.
