While the folks here were having an intelligent and civil discussion about religion I just went out and saw one of the best concerts of my life.
Playing together, solo and as a group were the following fiddlers - Tommy Peoples, Paddy Cronin, Seamus Connolly. Tommy McCarthy, Danny Meehan, Laurel Martin, Larry Reynolds and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. Need I mention that all of Altan was sitting at the table next to me and wooping it up, as were Paddy Keenan, Peter Molloy and a number of other fine musicians.
Everyone should live in Boston.

What are some of the hot spots I should check out? I’ll be pretty much free Saturday night and all day/night Sunday, and then evenings Monday and Tuesday.

Coulda stayed in the Boston area, but made our escape thirty nine years ago. If only we had known we’d be infatuated with Irish music we might have stayed, but Colorado called.

Yeah, I’m good friends with Shannon and Matthew. They live a couple blocks away from me and I go to Shannon for lessons from time to time. I think they are in Colorado recording their new album right now.

I’m leaving the city on Saturday but should be back on Sunday. You can give me a ring at 617-718-1588. If I’m not around be sure to check out the Burren Pub in Davis Square in Somerville. It’s going to be absolutely mobbed and will cost $25 to get in, but there’ll be music in both rooms all day. I might make it down in the evening. Honestly, it’s a bad weekend to be in Boston. It’ll be fun but crazy and the pubs will be so loud it’ll be nearly impossible to hear anything. Nevertheless, give it a go. Matt Molloy might be down at the Burren Friday, Saturday or Sunday because his son Peter works and plays there.
I’d be happy to go out for some tunes next week though. Perhaps Monday? If you’re going to be around Wednesday night you can catch Karen Casey (from Solas) at the Burren http://www.burren.com/. The Monday night sessions should be really nice!

Now a thread like this, “I” find offensive!
Just kidding, although I do think it’s unfair for all you east coast types to constantly rub Midwesterners’ noses in our poverty vis-a-vis Irish music.
Where I live, we get one exposure to professional grade Irish music per year, at a concert in the local University auditorium the week before St. Patrick’s day. Of course, it’s always sold out, not that the Auditorium planners show any grasp at all of the obvious corollary.
Other than that, “Irish” music is the stuff you hear on American old-folks’ radio the week before St. Patrick’s day, and traditional music features steel guitars and bad singers in cowboy hats.

Can’t wait for this summer now! I’ll be in Boston for the Gaelic Roots fest and all of the above mentioned are slated to play. Woo hoo! Wish I lived there all the time. We’ll, perhaps I’ll take L.A. during the winter…less music, more sun. lol
OKay, now I really want to go to boston. That is so not fair!

Mmmm… Paul Groff may still sell whistles. So might Jimmy Noonan. I don’t know though, this is pretty much a Generation/Sindt city.
