Where's ChrisLaughlin?

Since we’re wondering where everyone is…where’s Chris? Last time I heard anything was when he posted those nice sketches. I sent him a private message with no reply as of yet.

I don’t know him from Adam, but he made me chuckle more than once.

Anyone know what’s up?

Kim

I’ll speak on his behalf Kim.

It was a freakin’ recorder.

I seem to recall him saying he was heading for Ireland.

i feel funny knowing this and not knowing chris at all and not even knowing the board that well, but due to strange coincidence i do know that he is in germany next week visiting brigitte and colin goldie who live close to here. i might even get a chance to meet him on friday.

I am in Ireland!

I’ve been here for about a week and played in some mighty, mighty sessions. The most memorable, I must say, was this past Saturday in Westport where I spent the night fluting away in Matt Molloy’s! Excellent, excellent stuff indeed.
Besides Westport I’ve been in wild and crazy Dublin (sessions at Hughes), the wilds of Donegal (hiking in rainstorms and sinking up to my knees in mud), South Armagh (hanging out with the likes of Niamh Parsons - who gave me a ride there and back - at a great singing festival, with good tunes as well), Sligo town (where I climbed Benbulben and had some great tunes as well) and other assorted fun places. I am indeed off to Germany on Wednesday, thanks to the neverending generousity of Colin and Brigitte Goldie who will be putting up with me for a while… should be fun! I promised them I’d cook and clean if they like
By the way, I’ve only seen/heard one whistle in any of the sessions I’ve been to so far and it was a Generation

Best,
Chris

P.S. - Kim, sorry not to get back to you. I will most certainly send you those pictures as soon as I get back to the USA.

French,
I am looking forward to meeting you!
Best,
Chris

Chris, glad you’re having fun in Ireland (one doesn’t go to Germany to have fun).

I know your online time is probably short right now, but I was just wondering: What kind of whistle is that on the sound track of Lord Of The Rings? You know, the hobbit theme.

It’s a frickin’ recorder!
Jaysus, Mary and Joseph…grumble, grumble, grumble…&^%&£ recorder )*£&)%£^ straight through £"&^$&“^” frickin’ bodhran… grumble…

Hey Chris,

I got my sister in Boston to cross Beacon St. to O’Leary’s and listen to a session! She said the first ones there were a mature-looking fiddler (Tommy Peoples?) and a younger flutist, who led a lot of tunes. No whistlers that night, but 8 fiddlers showed up, plus a few more flutists, some concertinists (she called them “bandoneonists”) and a bodhran player! Thanks for passing on the O’Leary’s info. I got to vicariously enjoy a great session. And she got out of the classical piano world for a while!

No problem.
Yeah… the older looking fiddler would have been Tommy Peoples and the young flute player Peter Molloy. Needless to say, it can be a wicked session.

Unfortunately, as your sister noticed, there has been quite an increase in the number of folks who really have nothing to add to the session and simply butt in from time to time to show off their ‘creative’ renditions of The Kesh Jig or Sheebeg Sheemore… as if Tommy Peoples and Peter Molloy are impressed

A LOT can be learned by just listening. I’d say I spend 80-90% of my time listening in a session, and I’ve been playing intensively for five years now.

As for lack of whistles, most of the whistle players in Boston have moved on to flute now - not because it’s necessarily a better instrument but because playing the flute is a full time job and takes some real dedication. The whistle takes a back seat to flute playing. Of course there are people in Boston like Kathleen Conneely who is instantly given charge of any session she steps into although she plays whistle exclusively.

Anyways, I’m glad your sister had a good time. Tell her to get down to the Druid in Inmann Square on Friday around 6. They have really, really good sessions that are almost always in top form.

Best,
Chris

Well, I’m glad I asked just to give you an opportunity to tell about it! Sounds like you are having the time of your life!

I had the pleasure of watching a session at Matt Molloy’s last May. Good craic! Did the older fellow with the plaid pants and black horned rim glasses show up and sing at all?
When we were there he sang a lament about his gal and her mobile phone that was so funny. Went something like…

My lass has a mobile phone, we never talk no more.
Whenever I ask her for a kiss, she says, “Hold on lad while I answer this!”

Glad you’re having a great time. Hope to get back there sometime next year.
