Seeking sessions, concerts and festivals in Ireland - Oct 2-

Hey all -
I’ll be in Ireland, with my home-base in Dublin (yes, I know, the west is best), from the 2nd through 16th of October. If anyone has any suggestions as to sessions, concerts and festivals to attend please let me know. I am looking for the real deal of course - the less touristy/commercial the better.
Thanks to all in advance,
Chris

Lucky man. . .. . .we have to wait for spring to go back.

look at http://www.glor.ie for the programme of the new music centre in Ennis, always something on there.
Come to the sundaynight session to play wih us, is mostly half decent ;-].

PS
I may be in Dublin early october, the Singer’s club has booked one of the old singers from around here and they are trying to get Kitty Hayes and myself to play, which we will if Kitty decides she wants to go, I am not sure about dates etc.

Yeah, Peter, my experience in Ennis has been that the music is usually half-decent  . However, I was a little disappointed by the lack of guitars, recorders, synthesizers and O’Carolan tunes… hey, I guess you can’t have everything. Oh well.
Thanks for the invite,
Chris
P.S. - I am not happy to be missing the Ennis Trad Fest in November. Do you know Carmel Greene? She’s a great woman.

Peter, please e-mail me if you are going to be at the singers club (I assume you mean the Goilin). My girlfriend has been going there with Niamh Parsons, so she knows the turf. I’d love to hear Kitty play (and you as well, of course). I just love the concertina, and especially the Clare style of playing it.

Best,
Chris

Arghhhh you guys make me jealous! I wanna be there!!!

Check out this site Chris. There is a good search feature on there for events all round Ireland by month.

Hope it helps. Looking forward to going there myself in March though most of my time will be spent in Galway/Clare with family etc.

Have a great holiday.

Pretty cool site. I found an Irish surfing event. Who’d a thunk it!

I’ll be over around the same time as Chris, but visiting family doesn’t leave much time for galavanting.
Cheers,
jb

Brownja, you’d never believe it, but I learned to surf in Ireland!
Best,
Chris

Chris,
Try the Cobblestone pub in Smithfield Square (it’s across the square from Chief O’Neill’s). They had a good Sunday afternoon session the last time I was there. It’s on the northside of the Liffey behind the Four Courts. I’d also suggest viewing the ITM museum in Chief O’Neill’s but Joe McKenna told me that it’s closed. Enjoy your trip. I heard that the rain finally stopped.

Try Kilkenny city. It has a very active session scene. Even better Ennis!

Your currency must be fairing better than the aussie dollar, to afford to stay in Dublin for two weeks.

Kilkenny offers the Both country and western to other extreme of ‘normal’ sessions non-CCE organised sessions.

Hi!
If you’re anywhere near Cork, then there’re sessions pretty much every night of the week in the city (except Saturdays/Sundays, I think…). The Spailpin Fanach on S.Main St has trad sessions every night (see exception above): includes Seamus Creagh, the Moynihans (Calico)… lots of people! The Lobby Bar on Union Quay has a session on Tue. nights, and concerts almost every night - not all trad though; check http://www.lobby.ie for details. There’s a pub on the Old Douglas Rd that had sessions (last year) on Thu nights, called the Gables. And the Corner Bar, on Coburg St, has sessions on Wed night, and some [free] concerts on Thursdays - I don’t know what they’re going to have. (They had Flook in August; Sliabh Notes’ Cork CD launch in May(?)…)
Have fun!

Eh Fluter,

I almost got an appartment in Cork in march on North Main Street, just beside the cinema. Cork is just a gorgeous city, but the rent was just too expensive (760EURO for a 1 1/2!) for me and went in Limerick instead (worst decision ever). I had an interview at Qumas, this big pharmaceutical software company 5 minutes from city center, and didnt get the job. Geeze, Cork would have been a nice place to live!

Yeah, Cork’s expensive - I’m in student apartments, but even they work out at about 65-75 Euro a week - and that’s with 3-5 students sharing… I’m looking forward to having money - ANY money! - when I graduate…

The Irish Music Box site has sessions worldwide listed. Here’s the one for Ireland;
http://www.dojo.ie/musicbox/trad/ireland.html

And you could have a look at the festivals and sessions listed on http://www.madfortrad.com.

Chris, are you going to Galway? If so drop me an email and I’ll give you some good contacts.
