Boston Sessions

Where are they? Which one’s are hot, and which one’s are not?

Loren

The O’Leary’s, which I think is in Brookline is supposed to have a good one. I’ve also heard that the one at the Greenbriar in Allston or Brighton is also good. I’m not sure about days and times. You could check www.sessioneer.com, at the very least contact info is posted so you can inquire. If you’re in Boston and can make it to Portland ME, I’ll shamelessly plug our session at Brian Boru’s on Center St. It’s Sundays from 3 to 6 or 7 depending on the craic. Very good session, not too many people like some have. At peak, during the winter there can be as many as 10-12 people, but most of the time it’s nice and manageable, about 6-8.
During the summer it’s usually at most 5 or 6 of us. Good mix of instruments, two pipers, one of whom also plays fiddle, a variety of fiddlers from 1-4 in number, a bazouki player. We used to have a smokin’ box and concertina player, but he’s in college in Lowell now, so only makes it on school breaks. We could use a fluter showing up, rarely any there. I play the flute of course, but usually only play the fiddle at the session.

Are you asking from a punter’s or musician’s point of view?

Thanks Corin

Both Don, if you’d care to elaborate.

Loren

Clearly Boston isn’t much of a hot spot for Irish Music

Loren

Actually Boston is very hot with ITM, just from a session standpoint, those are what I was told were the best sessions. There are a few more around the metro area, and The Burren in Somerville always has performances. Among others in the last year that have played there are Tommy Peoples, Frankie Gavin, Matt Molloy’s son, Peter and much more

Corin

Corin, I did appreciate your post  My last post was simply sarcastic in nature: I know full well that the ITM scene in Boston is excellent - as good as it gets in the US, and so I found the low number of responses amusing, and thought I’d play on that, it’s my nature, so I couldn’t resist :smiling_imp:

Loren

Aha! Touche!

Corin

Hi Loren -
I wish I was going to be around Boston while you were there.
Boston is full of good sessions. My favorite is at O’Leary’s pub on Sunday night (early, around 7) at 1010 Beacon St at the St. Mary’s St. exit on the Green Line. Tommy Peoples was playing there for a while (don’t know if he’s still around) and Peter Molloy and Tina Lech are regulars (among others). The food is great, it’s no smoking, easy to hear… really nice.
The Burren in Davis Square, Sommerville (Davis Square stop on Redline) features top class playing but can often be really loud and crowded. Also, don’t plan on playing unless you’ve got some real craic. I recommend going there Sunday night after O’Leary’s or Monday night. It usually gets started around 10.
There used to be a really nice session at the Druid in Cambridge on Friday evenings. I don’t know if that’s still going on.
We also used to have a really pleasent, slower, mellow session at Hennesy’s in Government Center on Saturday afternoons, but I think that’s been cancelled.
I’ve not done the Green Briar thing, but I hear it’s pretty cool. It’d be worth checking out.
Also, make sure to check out the events calender at the Burren http://www.burren.com/burrenframeset.html. They also have good concerts. Also Johnny D’s and the Somerville Theatre often host some of Ireland’s finest.
You’ll find some good music in Boston.
Best,
Chris

Loren,
Flook will be at the Burren tomorrow night (the 7th). The Boston Celtic Music Festival will be taking place at the Burren on the 10th from 11 AM to 6 PM with music in the back room and sessions in the front. I’m sure they’ll be sessions all night long. www.bcmfest.com
Enjoy, you lucky dog!
Chris

Ah, there you are Chris! I thought I’d offended you in some way (that I wasn’t aware of), heh heh

Thanks for all of that! I did see that Flook will be at the Burren, unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be able to swing going to the show financially as I came to Boston driving on bald tires and fumes as it was, but I can’t complain since I did have the chance to see them earlier this year in Asheville.

Thanks again for the info - the T-stop details are particularly useful since I’m not that familiar with the city, even though I did go to high school just north of Fitchburg.

Keep in touch and, if I’m still around the next time you’re in town, let me know so we can finally catch up in person.

Best,

Loren

Hey dude, what part of the world are you in right now anyway? It’s only Jan. 5th here in Boston!

Seriously dude, thanks
