I wanted to go to Ireland but The Boss
needs to finish writing several articles so that she gets
not to perish. I was wondering about accomodations
in the Boston area over the summer. I figure maybe lots of students
go somewhere else and we could get a room
in an apartment. We need very little,
being Bohemian types.
Can anybody tell me whether this is practical?
The point is to be near ITM and flute teachers.
(The Boss will be near libraries.)
Am I right in supposing this is the right
place to go for ITM in the USA?
Any other places, outside of NYC and LA,
where we might go? I was wondering if
there is music in Chapel Hill NC,
or any other place with a University.
There are a few hostels for short term stays, however other than that, housing here can be a bitch. You may be able to find a one or two month sublet in an apartment somewhere, but the rent here is high (I should know, I’ve been looking for several months now) - expect to pay a minimum of $500 a month plus utilities for a VERY small room to share in a 2-4 bedroom apartment. Standard rents are closer to $650-$700 for a slightly larger room in a house with the same number of roomates. One doesn’t get much bang for the buck here I’m afraid, although it is a kick ass town.
Thanks so much, Loren. Rather what I thought.
I lived in Cambridge once. The summer was spectacular,
lots of street musicians and jugglers, it was
a carnival. But my roomates were psycho, so
much so that I moved into another apartment,
where my roommates were psycho, too.
Too bad. Have a great time. Thanks again,
Anybody know where there’s a good ITM
scene, a university, and housing?
Jim, you might try Chicago. I hear there’s a little bit of Irish music there from time to time. In fact, the ITM scene in Chicago was the subject of L.E. McCullogh’s PhD dissertation.
Of course, I can’t help you beyond naming the city, because I’ve never been there myself, but there are some folks around here who ought to be able to help more. Or try The Session.
I’m from the Boston area, and Loren is right about the renting situation. However, there is plenty of Irish music to be found. The best place is the Burren in Davis Square, and it’s sister pub, the Skellig in Waltham. Plus, there are sessions to be found at various spots in the area. I’ve heard there is a slow session at the Green Bryar in Brighton, which I plan on attending when I get a little better. I don’t know if this helps, but there you go.
