Hello all,
I’ll be near Boston for Thanksgiving - a town called Hingham (to the southeast, I think). Boston has lots of Irish heritage, so there must be some most excellent whistle shops there, right? Well, if there are, and anybody knows their names, I’d love to know:-)
thanks!

You can go south to Plymouth and Celtic Fire. They have Overtons, Howards, Weasels, plus a variety of the less costly brands. They also have CDs and books.
On the other side of Boston, in Lexington, there is the Music Emporium that has whistles. I have seen Howards, Overtons, Cheiftains, Shaws and Grinters there at different times but it is a hit or miss what they might have at the moment.
Both places have web sites where you can get phone numbers, addresses.
You might also try the Von Huene
Workshop (Early Music Shop of New England)
in Brookline. Mainly a recorder and early
music store but I know they have some
whistles as well. As already noted
Celtic Fire and Music Emporium are good
sources. Have a good trip!
If you’re around Boston, drop me an e-mail before-hand. There are some great sessions around here. Last night I sat in on a session with Tommy Peoples (Bothy Band) and Peter Molloy (son of Matt Molloy).

Bob - Yeah, I guess “whistle shop” is rather vague. I’m a beginner, so mostly I was looking for a place to try out a variety of whistles in different makes and keys. I hadn’t even thought of whistle makers. It’d be interesting to see a shop of that sort, though I’m not good enough to justify buying anything on the high end (yet!). Does that clarify?
Joe and Mike - Thanks! I should be able to get to one of those stores at least.
Chris - If you mean PLAY in a session, that can’t, or won’t, happen, since my vast experience of 2 months’ whistling won’t quite let me! But I’ll certainly drop you an email since I’d love to HEAR a good session
Did you visit any of the music stores? Buy any new whistles?
Joe
Yes and yes I only managed to get to one shop, Celtic Fire, but that was fun. They didn’t have any of the low whistles or higher-end whistles I was hoping to see - no Howards, no Overtons, no Weasels of any kind, sigh. I did pick out a Generation Eb, which I’m enjoying. Thanks again to all for the store suggestions.
Cheers,
Paul
PS to Chris - It turned out my family had booked all my evenings for family-type stuff so I couldn’t go to any of the sessions you mentioned. Rats. I do appreciate the info., though, even if I couldn’t make it!
