I was watching the SCOLA channel last night and saw a film clip from 1932, The Musical Doctor, starring Rudy Vallee. http://www.classicmovies.com/cm/film_detail.asp?film_id=520
One of the scenes included a tin whistle. It was only on screen for a brief moment, but it appeared to be all metal, non-tunable, and cylindrical. I was quite surprised when it appeared among the various jazz instruments, like saxophone and violin. (I’m pretty sure the on-screen violinist was not actually playing the violin, but didn’t have time to decide about the whistle player.)
The song that was being played at the time was “Keep A Little Song Handy”, which is, unfortunately, not the one shown on that Web site.
