I first became acquainted with the Sweet Potato Tooters, from their appearance in the Comedy/Western Girl Crazy. Prior to WWII, this ocarina ensemble/vocal group was known as The Foursome. Just thought I’d point them out as a popular music group from the first half of the 20th Century that had a tinwhistle in the band. Composer/bandleader Del Porter served as whistler, besides singing and playing ocarina.
Old comedy westerns and whistles ? See also the W.C. Mae West & tinwhistle topic.Could there be a hidden force at work?
Just last night I was channel surfing and stopped at Crossing Jordan, which attracts me, although I’ve never managed to watch an episode all the way through. It must have been a re-run, since it was after 10:00 pm.
The main character [Jordan] was being dragged up on stage in a pub by (I presume) her father, the owner (I further presume). She grabbed a guitar and proceeded to sing nicely, being backed up by a band that included button accordion, fiddle, and tin whistle. Not exactly ITM, but a bit Irish sounding, somehow.
I only saw the whistle player for a moment. He had rather long hair, and I think he may have been playing a Generation, but the moment passed too quickly for me to really focus.
Anyone know if this band was/is a regular part of the show?
