Hello guys! Here I have a strange and bad question for you: if you have to choose between Rogge and Preshaw uilleann pipes… what do you prefer? I am looking for pro or not of both pipemaker, but I haven’t found nothing yet.
Both the pipemakers you mention make good instruments. Normal advice is to look for a professional (full time) pipemaker as close as possible but this is not easy for someone living in central Italy.
There is Charles Roberts in Spain or Brendan Ring in France but although closer than UK or Eire they are still not very close to you.
Are there any festivals in Italy where you can try before you buy there are some C&F members in the North who may know. There are two or three in France maybe more that are pipe orientated - St Chartier, Lorient. Rogge sometimes goes to St Chartier
Andreas Rogge .He is well within reach of ye in Tubingen in Germany.I use his sets and I reccommend him to ye
(Given the query was between Rogge and Preshaw why was it necessary to bring Roberts and Ring into the equation? stick to the topic ,its easier in the long run..)

Elmek, I understand you mean, but u r right! No pipemaker is close to me (or to Italy).
I have mentioned this two pipermaker because they are fairly close to me rather than, for example, Seth Gallagher, BC, etc… and because by the sound file on their website I like the sound of their own pipes.
Uilliam, can u give me additional info about ur pipes?
Ciao paulo..I play C B and D.I have had no problems with them regards tuning or workmanship/looks.You should visit his website and listen to soundfiles and look at the work, also his list of players he has made pipes for.Don’t know what else ye want me to say really …I am happy enough with them.I have no experience with Preshaw pipes so cannot make any comment.
I do not think Italy is very far from Germany in the scheme of things and in relation to where pipemakers actually are he is probably the nearest to ye.

There used to be a guy in Italy making pipes for a while, wasn’t there?
Anyhow, if you think distances I don’t think Tubingen would be less hassle than Ireland. It’s always best to go for the pipemaker who’s work you like best. Billh made a good point only this week about the choice of a so so pipemaker near and a good one further off.
Hi Peter, I agree with your last sentence. I know a guy in Italy making GHB but not UP.
I want to stay in EU for my next upgrade 'cause of the custom fees for non EU country! And for this reason I am looking for a “good” pipemaker.
Look guys I am being pedantic I know but Paulo did ask .." if you have to choose between Rogge and Preshaw uilleann pipes"
Now if he had asked for an appraisal on every pipemaker in Europe or the world for that matter he would have. But he didn’t.I personally don’t give a tinkers cuss who he chooses.Wally waits 3 years so what? thats how it is.I certainly don’t think Andreas is a so/so maker .

Both make great pipes. Both have great reputations. Probably different sounding chanters… but the differences wouldn’t be important. You get used to whatever you play. Unless you played both (touch, feel, and smell) or recently heard both in the same place, to be able point a finger and say “I want THAT sound” and knew about the wood specie and who reeded them, etc. (reeds make a difference)
What? so a busy pipemaker should halt everything coz someone “only” wants a chanter..imagine if he were to do that for everyone then he would have a bit of a problem with his waiting lists.
Pat Heike used to live in Italy but she has moved back to Tubingen

Hi Tony… yes I have approached them… Martin has a 6 months waiting list for a D pitch chanter, and Rogge has not answer to my email yet.
Who’s Heike Horstmann (or Pat Heike)? On Rogge’s site in the deutsch page I see this name, but I have never heard about her works.
Thank you very much for your support, if I follow my idea on these two pipemakers, maybe Preshaw has the first position due to the waiting list. I’ll keep you informed.
She has worked with Andreas for years and was apprenticed to him.She turns out excellent sets and I have one of hers in C boxwood with black cowhorn mounts. The regulators on this set have never needed retuning which I find pretty well extraordinary these days given the amount of people I see who say they can’t play their regs because they need tuning This is the set The regs have the fine tuning slide at the top (near the stock) but as I said I havnae had to bother yet.Paulo we have a saying here it goes"good things come to those that wait"

Your C set is beautifull!!! Why you don’t sell it to me?
You know, as a newbie in piping, at my stage I’d move to the drones now… I would add more “noise” to my piping day… so I can’t wait three or more years to have a “little bit” sound. Of course, I undestand good things come to those that wait and I agree with it.
Just now, I have received the answer from Ray Sloan: 6-9 months for a half set in D fully mounted. At the moment I am really really confused (and I think, or I hope, it is normal for a complete novice).
You know Paolo, you really just need to go out and look at people’s pipes before ordering anything. It’s the only sensible way if you want to end up with something that will come as close as possible to what you are looking for. Not all pipes are the same and some will and some won’t suit. It’s an awful chance to take if you just buy them by sending off an e-mail. In fact I think it’s absolutely foolish.
