Advice

Hi All,

I am relatively new to piping (playing for about a year and getting on very well). My teacher has advised me that since I am progressing quite well, he thinks I should be thinking about looking for a really good full set from a reputable maker. He himself has a lovely set from Fremont. anyone know about these?(he is away touring and I haven’t had the chance to ask him. Could anyone advise about Seth Gallagher’s pipes also? Or where I could get my name down where there might’nt be too long to wait. I am thinking if I could get my hands on a pretty decent set within say a year or so so have my name down for a set for delivery from a maker where there is a big waiting time (as with the maker of my teacher’s pipes or elsewhere) Has anyone any suggestions forme. I would really appreciate your opinions. Thanks.

Droner, have you checked the FAQs on this board? You will find a strong recommendation to find a pipemaker nearest to you. I don’t know any way of getting a full set in under two - three years unless you buy it off eBay. I can’t recommend any makers because I don’t know where you are.

Thanks for your reply. I am in Dublin mostly. It would be ideal to have a pipe maker nearby but the pipes I have are Spanish and of very good quality and tone and they sent me a reed in seven days before Christmas…I don’t think I would buy my ideal full set from them however.

NPU has a pipemaker list on their site. I’m sure if you asked around that they could make recommendations.

I would second djm’s advise, and anyway, if any of us made a recommendation we would instantly be under attack from other members of the board.

We all have very strong opinions.

Good luck and God speed to you though.

I can recommend Seth Gallagher without hesitation. He makes fine instruments and is very committed to customer service.

A friend once loaned me an Alain Froment chanter for in B a few weeks–I hated to give it back. I haven’t had any direct dealings with Mr. Froment, but there are some mighty fine pipers who swear by his pipes. I believe his waiting list is fairly long.

Good luck with the hunt,

No E

There is always David Boisvert. I believe that his waiting period is still relatively short.

To date, everyone I have spoken with regarding his pipes have been very pleased with his work. He lives in Minnesota, USA.

I had a quick telephone conversation in January last year with Alain Froment, and at that time his waiting list was 10 years long,

regards,
Mark.

Seth Gallagher makes excellent pipes. His waiting list has been shortened and, coming from Dublin, you’re in a very good position with respect to a favorable Euro/USD currency exchange. Ask Paddy Maloney; he recently purchased a set from Seth. Best.

Yes, David has a short list, he communicates, and does beautiful work. I will have a new chanter from him in about a month. I have already talk to him about adding drones. I just need to scrape up the money. I have even cosidered selling my surf board but that would be traggic with summer coming on.

Dude, do NOT give up the surf board…not even for pipes…it would be bad karma..totally.

Don’t worry, it was just a momentary weakness. I will have to come up with some clever way of justifying the expence. My wife is very nitpicky with the money, which is better, I have to admit then a wife who is always trying to spend the money quicker than it can come in.

But thanks for the advise. I think God wants me to surf and pipe, so it will work out.
