getting some uilleann pipes soon, need help.

so, my friend fixed my car for me for a very low price, what a pal! so now i don’t have to get a new car. i was thinking about getting a set of pipes soon in the near future. they are so expensive, that i can only get one set for my whole life, so i need to make a good decision for a practice set, then add on to that until i get a full set. who would you recommend for me to get? something that is a great set, for beginners and pros alike? i would greatly appreciate any advice.

I’d search for past topics on buying a set.

Some basics:

Buy from a reputable maker. If you’re going to depend on the maker for your reeds (rather than learn reed-making), make sure they’re somewhat local. KNOW THE MAKER Go to a gathering to listen to a bunch of different pipes by different makers with different reeds to see which maker you fall in love with. If you find a used set and have someone go over it who’s experienced with pipes, you can save money. If you don’t mind a frankenset, you can get a chanter from whomever you like and add the stock/drones/regulators from another maker later (I’d advise if you want a unified set, it’s better to stick with a single maker if you’re a beginner). What am I forgetting.. I’m sure there’s something.

thanks Dionys.

Ibuprofen.

Oh yes.. If you’re of the not-young persuasion, or the not-used-to-drones-and-ducky-sounds persuasion, Ibuprofin will come in very handy.

Tablet & Gel form and both very handy, with piping. all the best. :stuck_out_tongue:

well, could anybody give me a list of makers, or used ones on sale? that would be great if you could.

Read the FAQs on this forum.

Look for lists of makers on the NPU web site.
Look for sets for sale on the Uilleann Pipe forum and on the Uilleann Obsession site.

Find a maker near to you that you can complain to and get help from easily, especially if there are no experienced pipers close to you.

Go to tionols as previously suggested and listen to different sets and different pipers. Ask them about their experiences with their pipemakers and what they recommend.

You get what you pay for.
