I’m new to the forum and this is my first post/topic, so please be gentle with me!
Two summers ago I had the opportunity to try out a practise set on loan, and also briefly tried out a full set. I was very interested in taking up the instrument, but lacked the funds to buy any pipes at that time.
I’m now in a better position financially, and I’m therefore looking into purchasing a full set (I should mention I’ve played classical guitar seriously for 20 odd years - so I’m aware of what’s involved in learning an instrument in terms of time and dedication).
Basically, I’d like some advice from any impartial Uilleann Pipe players who use the forum, on the best course of action to take. That is:
Where can I go for a decent set?
How long will it take to get them? (as ideally, I’d like to get them as soon as possible.)
What is it likely to cost, and what’s usually involved re. deposits etc.?
I am NOT an experienced pipe player, but I thought I would post here as I recently spent quite a bit of time researching before purchasing my first pipes…
Where can I go for a decent set?
There are several pipe makers who have a decent reputation for crafting quality instruments. I found this list quite helpful: http://www.uilleannobsession.com/links_makers.html
You can also find decent used sets for sale, keep an eye out here on C&F and on Uilleannobsession.
How long will it take to get them?
This really depends on the maker.
My practice set was about three months from order to delivery.
My 1/2 set should be about 2.5 years from order to delivery.
One benefit to purchasing used pipes is you can get them fairly quickly.
What is it likely to cost, and what’s usually involved re. deposits etc.?
Again, cost will vary. For a full set, maybe anywhere from $4,000US - $12,000US
Deposits may range anywhere from 10% to 50%
I hope this information helps, best of luck to you. - C
Try and learn as much as possible first by visiting websites about uilleann piping, and the websites of uilleann pipemakers. Visit your nearest uilleann piping club or festival if possible. www.pipers.ie is a good place to start, look at the for sale ads to get an idea of prices for practice, half and full sets. There are also secondhand sets for sale on www.uilleannobsession.com Ask here or on other forums if you find something you think may be suitable before buying. If you’re gagging to start piping then probably quickest/best to buy a good second hand set. Start off with a practice set that has a decent chanter, or if money is no object and you are really commited there is a Koehler & Quinn 3/4 set for sale on uilleannobsession.com
I have an 3/4 set Im looking to Part with if your interested. Here is the link to the set. My listing price is $6500 but if you like them I’ll probably let them go for less.
