I am asking you the experts for advice. I am wanting to learn the UPs. I first need a set. I am wanting someone out there to tell me where I could get a good practice set or 1/2 set of Ups for a great price…funds are scarce, but I do want a set.
Start with the FAQ thread at the top of this forum. It tells you to look for someone near you. You haven’t said where you are, so its difficult for anyone to advise you.
The FAQ thread also tells you what web sites there are around dedicated to UPs. There’s a couple that tell you where to look for 2nd hand stuff.
There are warnings about deals that are too good to be true (see the Pakistani pipes thread at the top of this forum). Do some more reading so you can help others help you by asking more specific questions.
Pat Sky, Andreas Rogge, Arie De Keyser and some others offer no frills buget sets after that your looking at anywhere from $1000 to $2000 for a practise set. Steer well away from these
I had a fantastic set produced by Seth Hamon whih I sold because I was hurting for $$$ going through tough times. Although times arn’t the best they are better, so now I am looking again.
I wish Seth was still making the sets…it was trouble free.
Very True. The Pennychanter is unparalelled in quality and sound for its price. For a guy who sells pipes because of financial reasons, far the most reasonable investment is a set from David Daye. I’d highly recommend the Pennychanter for all beginners, novice and intermediate pipers. I had woodden chanters from a number of reputable makers and the Pennychanter was/is at least as good as these much more expensive chanters. I have in-progress orders for chanters from other reputable makers, and I expect them to deliver at least as the (high) quality of my Pennychanter.
