Got my full set now

Just came home from a trip to New York and Cold Spring. Got my S. Gallagher full set in silver, ebony and boxwood. it looks really astonishing and plays like a dream..guess the rest is up to me??
Seth is a really nice guy and I had a look around his workshop and met his two companions too. Had a great time really.
Robert

Pics, man, show us some pics! Ooh, sound cllps, we need those too. Congratulations are also in order! By the way, is this a flat set or concert pitched set?

Congrats Robert!!!

Now you’re rockin’!

Congratulations Robert!

I know just how you feel…

J.

Pics will come and soundclips. Just need a camera and it’s a D concert set for those who wonder…

arrrrrgggg!!! I’m jalous!!

I will receive my order from Seth in minimum 9 month!!

How much time it take to receive your order?

9 months is a realatively short period of time to wait for pipes.

There is both a half set and a full et of Gallagher pipes on uilleannobsession for anyone who doesn’t want to wait even 9 months.

BTW, how would those people on the Wooff or Froment lists feel about a 9 month wait time.

I would be on Wooff’s list today if that were the case. I would order a C# set. I would sell my Hammish Moore pipes, my surfboard, my cat, and whatever else I could think of to get that set.

It took me just about 11 months from deposit to pick-up time. Had a go with my friend last night he was awed by the looks and the sound of both drones and chanter. The sound is rich and powerful. The regs sound as if an old organ was played…I love it. My arms and shoulders are a bit sore though, not used to the extra preassure to get that nice volume…
Rob

I’ve posted some tunes on my website now.

There is also a song that we have recorded with my band.

The MacLowlives

I’ve just tried a bit to fumble on the regs, but they sound great in my opinion.
The trad tunes are recorded with a cardiodid mic through a mixer and then useing Cubase.
no further mixing done, just clean and simple…
Rob

Nice tunes…

thanks !
just need some comments though at the moment I’m trying …just trying to sound the regs and is not as “down” to the chanter work as I should be otherwise…
still going for it I think

they’re absolutely fantastic and as sweet a set as i’ve ever played.

I would like to see some pics of these two new sets. Any chance of posting them here?

yeah, i’ll try. failed miserably to get pictures from my phone to computer before but il give it a go.

I am really glad to hear all that,I orded a full set also from Gallagher.
but there is something I don t get her,if his pipes are so good and (apparently they are),how come there is only a year on the waiting list whereas you need to wait at least 3 years for Andreas Roggue,7 years for Cillian O’Brian…?

Seth has a mini-factory going with assistants to help him put out more product and faster. Other pipemakers usually work individually, and not necessarily full time. There is not much profit in pipemaking.

15 for wooff, etc.

yeah, it sort of puzzled me when i first heard about him too.

i suppose the easy answer is that seth has 2 or 3 lads working with him and can make a huge quantity of pipes, maybe 30 sets in a year.

rumour has it that cillian, fromont or wooff only make between 4 and 6 sets a year.

also, seth is a relative new-comer as far as pipe makers are concerned and as yet, in ireland at least is not very well-known.

i expect this to change as his reputation here is growing by the day.

i guarantee you’ll be thrilled when you get your new set. can’t wait to get home from work to play some more.

Another thing that affects output (besides having assistants/apprentices etc.) is the way certain parts of the set are made. I don’t mean to suggest that Seth is cutting any corners - but rather that some makers such as Wooff, Koehler and Quinn, etc. choose labor intensive techniques for certain parts of the set. Hand-rolled ferrules, and timber slides, take more time than tubing slides, and a hollow stock can easily be a full week’s work. Whether this is an indulgence or simply fine craftsmanship may depend on your point of view. There are reasonable arguments for believing that the sound of such a set is better, but certainly there are fine sounding and playing sets without timber drone slides, hand-rolled ferrules, and hollow stocks.

I believe Geoff’s estimate is that there are over 300 hours in a full set (made by his methods), which certainly limits the number of sets that can be produced in a year by a single craftsman.

p.s. - I’d like to avoid the “is it better” debate here, in any case it’s a legitimate choice for maker and purchaser to make, and it’s up to free will
