Who's on whose waiting-list?

So who is on a waiting-list for pipes, how long yet and from whom?

I just found out that Cillian O’Briains’ waiting period has going from about 4 years to 6, in a months time!

Who the heck is buying all these pipes?

..

AB…good question! I really like to know how long it takes a reputable UP maker to complete a full set assuming that he (any shes?) works at it full time from start to finish and isn’t just doing it part time.

Two ways…1)with all metal parts ready made (perhaps by someone else), 2)including making all the metal parts.

It depends on if they are a full time maker, part time maker, or full time when they’re not touring maker. Or any variation thereof.

One would have to be able to produce at the very least, two practice sets a month to survive at a minimum level unless their spouse is supporting both of them.

I would say most pipemakers have many things going at the same time. Be it practice, half or full sets, There’s always the emergency repairs, reeds, upgrades, pieces and parts that go between the larger (already scheduled) orders.

So who on this forum is on a waiting-list for pipes, how long yet and from whom?

I have drones on order from Davy Stephenson - should be due soon, but the wait has been about 6 months so far.

I once asked one of the most reputable of the American pipemakers who happens to live near me what’s the most sets he has made in one year and he said 17 - when you think about it that’s not a lot.

I ordered a full set from Andreas Rogge over two years ago. (I believe I told you that in an e-mail, Elbogo) I’m still waiting. I don’t mind, though. when I ordered them, he told me it would probably be over two years. I can’t wait to see and play the finished product!

I didn’t ask him what they were, practice, half or full, but you know him pretty well too Kevin and he’s busy.

Paul, I’m still waiting! But its only been two weeks…

Anima, I’m amazed that he can do 17 in one year, considering the kind of work he does. I’ve seen some photos, and all I can say is that his attention to detail is extraordinary. Beautiful pipes!

AlanB, I really do understand how much work is put into making these pipes, and how much people impinge on the makers, with phone calls, emails, tour invitations, etc., etc., even taking vacations… all extending the time. I suspect that’s a part of being gifted, and by extension, a part of hungering for that gift… and having to wait for it.

I find that 6 to 8 weeks is a reasonable amount of time to make a full set, that includes making ALL the parts.

think of 200 to 250 hours going ito a well made set, sitting down with it, play the reeds and take time for tuning and voicing

It’s surprising the price isn’t a lot higher given the time spent!!

These guys and gals are really artists. Think of all the combined skills that go into making a set of Uilleann Pipes. Keeping in mind that a great Pipemaker has to master all of those skills, there can’t be a lot of people in the world who have that kind of discipline.

They say the average craftsman makes (after materials cost) about $3.00 an hour. Must be something else there to keep us at our arts.

hay all.

on seth’s waiting list for a concert pitch chanter with 4 keys, delivery in about 14-16 months at this point. will be learning with a daye PC in the meantime. i think the wait for seth is very reasonable compared to other makers. on the theory that each chanter he makes should be the best he has ever made, i do not mind the 12-18 he will make before he does mine. he is already very good from what i hear, but learning never stops.

my guess is that a new piper who puts in the time will be ready for drones about a year after starting on the chanter, so i will put myself in line for drones in about 6 months. in the meantime, having fun on the whistle.
