Question for an upgrade!

Yes, but half decent cane reeds or half decent synthetic reeds. :boggle:

Cane of course! The asthetics of the set were my choice entirely and designed to please nobody in particular, but moi.I thought it would be different to have black mounts given the choice was mine to make… the gap between the drones is an optical illusion and isnae half so bad in the flesh.
Peter gives sound advice really..take your time.

You know Paolo, you really just need to go out and look at people’s pipes before ordering anything. It’s the only sensible way if you want to end up with something that will come as close as possible to what you are looking for. Not all pipes are the same and some will and some won’t suit. It’s an awful chance to take if you just buy them by sending off an e-mail. In fact I think it’s absolutely foolish.

As Peter says you really need to look at a selection of makers before parting with a lot of cash.

Uilliam take note of Peter’s comments. In my original reply to the question of Rogge or Preshaw you posted against the suggestion that other makers should also be looked at yet now you agree - please try and be consistant. I note now that Sloan is also in the equation.

Both Charles Roberts and Sloan go to festivals in France - do they go to any in Italy ?

Try before you buy if at all possible.

Why not try a few makers to see if any of them will loan you a practice set to try to see how it stands up to your climate and that the sound is what you are looking for - with the the sort of money we have to fork out for an instrument this does not seem unreasonable. Do not forget to offer to pay the postage and insurance costs both ways and maybe one or more might be willing to do this.

Oh contraire dear boy  I am being consistant and I am sticking to the object of the post ie Rogge or Preshaw which is more than ye appear to be doing. In agreeing with Peters advice I was saying take your time in coming to the decision .Go and look at the pipes is the best advice of all.Waiting times are not everything.I have not introduced anyone else into the topic I leave that for the likes o ye to do :tomato:

Definitely. Why not go to a tionol (there’s some in Germany, France, Holland…) ? I know it’s time and money, but this is probably the best way to have a good look at sets from different makers, and a good opportunity to talk…

Thanks guys for your advices.

I want to buy near Italy (France or German) due to our climate quite similiar, so I was talking about Rogge or Sloan but I hear a Preshaw pipes and I like the chanter tone.
At the moment I am managing a travel in South of France in Easter time (festival de musique) to speak with some pipemaker (Charles Roberts, Christopher Bayley and Ray Sloan).

Thank you Fergmaun for your info about an italian pipemaker. I’ll try to contact him to have some info about him pipes.

All the best.
Paolo

Martin preshaw’s waiting list is growing. I have a concert D chanter by him which is great and took about 4 months to arrive ordered just over a year ago. I have just ordered a set of drones and will have to wait until may 2008 for them. His work is very high quality and the sound is excellent so well worth the wait but dont delay too long as the list will only get longer
