Paddy Reynolds Dream

I’ve learned the second and third parts of this tune, but the first part eludes me! Banging head against wall hasnt’ helped, so I plead for assistance! I usually do pretty well by ear, but have only a scratchy fiddle recording, and I just can’t get the first two bars of the A. I tried a search for the sheet music on JC Tunefinder, but came up blank. Can anyone post the abc for it? Or direct me to a link? Or I can MP3 you the recording if you’ve got better ears than mine? Yep, I’m desperate. Any assistance is appreciated!

I’ve never heard of that tune - are you perhaps thinking of “Paddy Ryan’s Dream”? Although that’s normally a two-part tune. Paddy Reynolds is a fiddler in New York, a very old man now but still going.

If it is P. Ryan you’re thinking of, you should have no trouble finding it. it’s not a very whistle friendly tune: it’s in A minor or A dorian and the first part goes down G below bottom D. It would require substantial reworking. I think I’d be tempted to transpose it into E, and play both parts in the same octave. If you need to play with others, doing it in E on a G whistle would do the trick.

Edited to add: if it is a different tune, or even if it’s the same one, by all means email me a clip to brothersteve AT rogermillington.com and I’ll have a bash at it for you.

Yeah, the title is definitely P. Reynolds, three parter. Great tune, if it doesn’t kill me first =) Thanks Stevie for the offer, I will get at to you asap! LeeAnn

Lee Ann,

Try this. I’m not surprised you were having trouble with the first part - everyone is playing something different. I’ve tried to produce a basic version that works even though we can hear that the fiddle, flute and accordion are doing lots of different stuff.

I’ve posted the clip so that other can listen to it (and correct my transcription if necessary - Sylvain M are you listening?) Note that the clip starts halfway through what I think is the second part.

BTW it sounds like a real 1950s tune to me.

Steve
