Paddy's Rambles Through the Park

Anyone have a gif (notation) for this? I know it almost seems easy enough to learn it by ear, but my ear ain’t that good yet. Thanks.

I learnt the tune by ear-primarily from Ronan Browne’s version on his ‘Wynd you know’ album, and also from John Doherty’s ‘Bundle and go’ album.

You need to hear Johnny Doherty’s version of this tune. It is on his “Bundle and Go” recording. Magical music altogether!

I found the ABC and sheetmusic here:

Patrick.

Thanks! Great little tune. Patrick, that ABC at the Sessions doesn’t work when played in Barfly… there’s a problem with the way it’s written down.

Ah well… you’ll have to learn it off the sheet and by ear then

PD.

You’re doing soundtrack music for a Charles Bukowski novel? That’s already been made into a film? Or is some entrepid soul taking it to Broadway?

Kevin, you are on to something there… Actually, isn’t Paddy’s Rambles
also called Paddy’s Ghostly Rambles Through the Park? A piper, a ghost and Paddy himself… hmmm… Waiting for Elbogo! Has a ring to it?!

I don’t know if anyone else calls it ‘Paddy’s GHOSTLY rambles through the Park’ but I christened a version of the tune that I sent in to ‘Tinwhistle tunes’ by that name because I’d gone a little O.T.T. with the reverb when I tried recording my new (as it was then) Alba low C whistle.
I thought that it did sort of conjure up the image of following, but never quite catching up with, some ethereal music at the dead of night-all that’s missing are a couple of Owl hoots (the Owls wanted Musicians’ union rate! ).

Ah, that is you, Kevin (the other one)… I was just listening to that
a few nights ago and found it quite nice. That’s where I got the “Ghostly” from!

I’ve been playing the notation I got from The Sessions (see above)
but I’ll be d**ned if it sounds like anything I’ve heard before!

Elbogo, you’re right. The version on the Session link is crap. Even the dots are crap. However, once I’d fumbled my way through it, I was able to remember the original well enough to play the tune from memory. Pat is right, though. You really want to hear Johnny Doherty playing this, as it is his tune.

djm

Ah, just found Paddy Glackin’s version of Paddy’s Rambles
on his In Full Spate CD… also quite nice. Of the 2 fiddle versions,
I prefer the Glackin one. The pipes version by Moloney is my
favorite.

edited, 2.22.04: The pipes version by Ronan Browne is my favorite.

Wait till you break down and buy Ronan Browne’s The Wynd You Know album. Best piping version you’ll find anywhere.

djm

djm, yes, I forgot about that one! I have Ronan’s CD, which is a wonderful one for sure, in my top 10, and true, that is really an
excellent version. Thanks for reminding me!

Elbogo, please can you tell me where you heard the Moloney recording of this tune?
If you like Donegal fiddle music, then I second the recommendation of Johnny Docherty’s ‘Bundle and go’ -it’s a marvelous album by someone who I recognise as a ‘touchstone musician’.It’s the ‘real pure drop’ stuff.

Oops! I’m getting old! No Moloney version, that I know of. Problem is,
I’m mad for both Paddy’s Rambles and the King of Laois. Both tunes are “rambling” around in my head!

I mistakenly mentioned Moloney’s version of Laois, Chieftains 3, Track 5 instead of Ronan’s version of Paddy’s Rambles. (!!?) What?! Jeez!!

Right,easy mistake( :boggle: ).
I have that Chieftains’ album too,I should check it out again.I must admit that I prefer their earlier stuff to the ‘all-star guest packages’ that they put out now(which to be honest,I only ever hear on the radio),individual member’s albums always seem so much more interesting in my opinion.
As has been mentioned before,a solo Moloney album would be one to hear-I’m sure that it would be the subject of much discussion on this board!

If Paddy did a ‘solo’ CD, I’m sure that the tracks would be Paddy + Sting, Paddy + Madonna, Paddy + …
