OT: Need some tech advice for my website

Hello,

If there’s any one who knows about framesets, my website (link below) which I built on Dreamweaver MX has two frames on the title page.

Trouble is, if you do a google search under my name - David Goldsworthy, the link that comes up sends the person not to the frame**set** but to the left or right frame only.
Both frames are titled, but the whole homepage frame set always comes up as ‘untitled document’

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers,

DavidG

It’s been a while since I did a webpage… Dreamweaver wasn’t out then.
I suggest you name your document “David Goldsworthy’s Uilleann Piping” so it appears in the strip across the top.
Google has linked the frame, probably because it was the first place with your name. Make that your (new) webpage and add your frames to it. Include your name to the text. Create a duplicate link from http://home.iprimus.com.au/ausdag/ sending you to http://home.iprimus.com.au/ausdag/IndexMain.htm This way no matter which link they hit it all leads to the same index page.
Make sense?

Thanks for the reply Tony. I’ve been trying to do that with the frameset document but it still always comes out as ‘untitled’ whereas the individual frames are named that.

Yes, basically. I’ll give it another whirl and see how I go. Unfortunately my books are specifically unspecific on this topic.

Thanks again,

DavidG

Fixed!! - The easy way; got rid of frames altogether.

OK, good idea. I dislike frames anyway but didn’t want to mention it as so many people use them… However, Google is still linking your website to http://home.iprimus.com.au/ausdag/IndexMain.htm page. You need to redirect that back to http://home.iprimus.com.au/ausdag/
which is probably named http://home.iprimus.com.au/ausdag/Index.htm by default.

never much liked frames myself…but I do think you have a very attractive page…

suggestions on my own page would be welcome

i got tired of people ready to hire until they find out that all bagpipes are not GHB. I still get that, even with the description and picture on the page…

I’ve deleted ~IndexMain.htm altogether and now the home page is ~Index.htm

I don’t know how to redirect Google other than to wait for it to pick it up again as it did the first time. Is there a secret I should know about to getting Google to your site quicker?

Thanks for the help.

Nice page Antaine. Although I have a dark monitor which I can’t brighten, which means I can’t see the wooden part of your chanter - it looks like a chanter top, nothing, a key floating in the etherial, nothing, then the chanter bottom  Most modern monitors (mine is an EV700 from 1998) would be much brighter and so your chanter would be visible.

That’s why most pics on my site appear a little washed out, because I prepare them on my monitor - Now I have to purposely keep them darker than what I’d like so that they look ‘normal’ on modern monitors.

Delete http://home.iprimus.com.au/ausdag/IndexMain.htm
The reason? google thinks it’s a good URL
It may take a few months for Google to delete that link once it’s invalid.

I live in frames. Nothing wrong with them. Your problem is in depending on a pre-packaged solution to insulate yourself from learning something as simple as HTML. The trick to what you want to do is easy - your initial frameset document must be named either index.html (standard) or home.html (Microsoft perversion, but recognized by most browsers).

The second thing to do is to make sure you name your frames. Then name your various pages to fit in the frames. So if I had, say, a sidebar frame on the left, I’d call the frame “sidebar” and display my menu pages in it as menu1.html, menu2.html, etc.

Also, make sure that any links you have to other web sites are opened in a window called “NEW”. That makes sure your visitor’s browser opens the link up in a new browser window instead of trying to display the linked page within one of your page’s frames.

The worst thing you can do is depend on a Microsoft product like FrontPage, which inserts bits of Microsoft coding that non-Microsoft browsers can’t read. Learn some basic HTML coding so that whenever one of these packages is doing something you don’t like you can go in and edit by hand to make it do just what you want. You be the master, etc.

Yeah, did all that - that’s how I had the frames up and running quite okay until I discovered some months later that Googles was only picking up on the individual frames rather that the frameset. I’ve recieved some code to play around with, so we’ll see what happens. Suffice it to say that whilst I enjoy doing websites, learning HTML is too far down on my list of priorities.
My loss I guess.

A way to catch the search tools’ attention is to use META tags on your index.html page to provide keywords to the search engine. The second step is to call up the search engine of your choice, and see if your page will come up - not likely, as it can take a few days to scan the whole internet. But you can short circuit this by inputting the URL of your home page to the search engine. This will, of course, bring the search engine directly to your page, making it recognize your address. Now, try doing more searches with your keywords and your URL. What you are doing is building up the search engine’s hit list before the search engine would normally get around to doing it. Search engines often share lists with each other. Starting out with something big like google helps ensure that other serach engines will eventually catch up, as well.

Hi Anthony!

Some thoughts:

  • Check the link to NPU … it works as they have a redirect, but it’s outdated.

  • With links in general: I don’t like when they open in the same window. Thus I always add the TARGET option. Just add it to the
<a href="" target=_blank>

and the linked page will open in a new browser window.

  • My personal idea is not to bring too much text on one page, i.e. that you don’t need to scroll down and down and down … group stuff and make a menue.

  • Last but not least I can only second what djm said: go for clean HTML coding … don’t use Micro$oft coding as it will not show up properly in Mozilla based engines as they are following the rules. There are small tools such as HTML-Tidy or the HTML-Validator from W3C.

So long … happy HTMLing and don’t forget your pipes!

Bah on WYSIWYG HTML producers. Hand code it with any text editor and make it render as you want. It’s easy enough.

Beginners guide: So, you want to make a Web Page!
Anything else you might need

No secret.

If you want to improve your ranking in google, you have to try to have other sites link to yours, particularly those containing similar keywords. Another thing you can do is to provide ALT tags for the photos with meaningful keywords. META tags aren’t used by google AFAIK, but they can’t hurt if other search engines use them. There are other techniques, but these seem to be the basics.

If you want to track your changes, this site seems to work as well as any:
