Geek Oracle: Google indexing.

I have created a website for some friends who have an organization. It’s been up on Google Sites for a month or so. If you don’t know anything about Google Sites, you probably can’t help.

I’ve made sure the site is “public,” that is, viewable by everyone. It all seems to work fine.

What has me baffled is that after several weeks, the site still doesn’t come up in a google search. Let’s say that the name of the organization is the Nebraska Safe Schools Association. (It’s not.) If one Googles that phrase, the site doesn’t come up.

My experience recently with Google is that it picks up new sites much faster than this. For example, about the same time I initiated this website on Google Sites, I started Left Hand Waving, also on Google Sites. The latter shows up as the first hit when I Google “Left Hand Waving.”

Any ideas?

If you want it to be indexed, submit the URL of the home page to Google using this form:
http://www.google.com/addurl/

In the UK, the waiting period was seven weeks before new sites got listed - unless you were prepared to pay a fee. That was about a year ago. I don’t imagine it will have speeded up.

Yeah. Did that already, twice. Once immediately after I started the site and again a couple of weeks ago. Thanks.

A long shot, but:

Could you have inadvertently placed a ROBOTS.TXT file on the web site, which is why google is not indexing it?

You also might want to use the Webmaster Tools on Google, and add a sitemap (such as sitemap.xml).

Google took a long time to add my sites, too. Goes somewhat faster if you start having links to it from other sites.

I am so nosey and snowed in. Nice to see the rest of your face:)

Have you tried the British Solution?

I wasn’t that bored

If you reference it from other sites Google will usually pick it up.
