Web page help

I want to set up a vanity page with lots of pictures of the kids, dogs and the usual crap.

I don’t want to load down a page with images that take forever to load and I don’t want to do the old one image per page routing with a “Next” and “Back” arrow.
I don’t want to use Photobucket because I want it on my page.

Any suggestions on how to make a decent image page?
Should I convert the images to a slideshow then post it as a video?

There’s a lot of software for doing this on your website. If your webhosting
company doesn’t offer one, you can go with something like Gallery:
http://gallery.menalto.com/

Or NeoPhoto:
http://www.neophoto.com/

Or something like that. The slideshow for many of these are like watching
a video, and usually use Flash. To see what these slideshows can look like,
here’s one from my Flickr page:
http://flickr.com/photos/31772457@N00/sets/72157594195835175/show/with/187247835/
(click “fast” at the bottom left, and it sails along…)

Another (older, simpler) way is to shrink a copy of the picture, called a thumbnail, and set the thumbnail on your main page as a link to a secondary page that has the fullsized image(s). This doesn’t require extra software to display, but you do have to have an image editing app to make the thumbnails.

I haven’t looked at it yet, but Shutterfly is offering a new service (in Beta) which sounds like just what you’re looking for. I’ve only used Shutterfly to share photos with family and friends, and to have prints made and a couple of ‘projects’, though, but this seems like it might be worth a try.

They call it Shutterfly Share

If you end up using it, let us know. I don’t have the time right now, but would love to see someone else’s page(s).

Also look around our site, he’s got some things posted in different formats. You might want to look the Nate and Mady site, he used a neat program for the wedding album pictures.

Thanks everybody for the tips so far.

My web host does offer Gallery but I’d like to check out all the options.
I’m using Yahoo Sitebuilder to create the site and it’s real easy to do thumbnails. Iframes might be another option.

I’m spending too much time lately on the web site, all the upcoming content, my new web cam, and other things I’m not getting enough practicing done on my mountain dulcimer.

I will now browse the sites above.

You could check out the selection of image galleries at Hotscripts.com.

The ones in the section I linked are PHP scripts. If your host uses ASP, then simply go to the Hotscripts.com homepage and navigate to the appropriate section.

If you want remotely hosted options then try this lot for size.

If you want the gallery hosted on your own webspace then you’ll probably need to check that your host provides the necessary server-side scripting and database. Probably the most common hosting set-up (and that offering the most flexibility for scripts from places like Hotscripts) is Apache/PHP/MySQL.

Hi!

A nice, simple, fast and free plugin that will run without a database is MiniGal2. It will install on any webserver in a few minutes, setup is simple after that you can login as admin to change any settings, layout, passwords for different folders etc in the admin control panel.

Demo Gallery

Upload photos by browsing your computer/network and select what photos you want to display. Supports batch upload and thumbnails will by generated automatically. You can also set titles and write a discription for individual photos.

It is old and development has been suspended but it works well for simple stuff like for family photos, small business …

For a new similar script solution still being supported try ZenPhoto
http://www.zenphoto.org
Uses PHP and MySQL

If you want a free Pro version - Get your website to run with Joomla!!!
Then you can choose from hundreds of free templates.
The best thing in web development since …

I have used the freeware program Irfranview
http://www.irfanview.com/

to quickly set up photo web pages. All a person has to do is select the photos from a contact sheet, and press the button. The program makes the thumbs and the html file ready for upload.

It won’t be customized, but if a person just wants to get the photos up, with thumbnails, it is a good way to go.

Cool. Even more ideas. A plethora.
I will work on it some more when I get back from Missouri next week.

If you have, or care to get, a Google account, I’ve had a good bit of luck with the Google Page Creator. It’s in development, but it has been for years. Gmail is still in beta, for crying out loud.

It allows you to build webpages very simply and intuitively. You can upload photos and insert those. Works great.
