OT: Free Photo Hosting Services?

A while back I started using http://www.picturetrail.com to host photos since my current system (webtv) has no real storage capability. Unfortnately it seems that the software Picturetrail uses to interface with my browser and transfer the pics (which is different from the software used for PC’s on this site) compresses my photos very poorly, so my photos end up looking blurry, when if fact they are not.

I’ve tried shooting on various lower resolutions with my camera, and that helps a little, but not enough, so…now I’m looking for another hosting service that might be better able to handle my high res (3.3 MegaPixel) images better. Of course Photopoint went belly up long ago, and another free hosting site I found isn’t compatible with webtv…

Any suggestions - other than get a real computer? (Oh how I’d love to, believe me!!!)

TIA,

Loren

Loren, check out http://www.yorkphoto.com. I think that’s what you’re looking for.

Thanks man, I’ll check it out. Much appreciated.

Loren

Glad I could help. Kim in Tulsa showed the site to me. I’m not 100% sure how it all works, but I emailed her a pic of me and my kids, and she set up a free account for me on that site. If it proves complicated, you might PM her with any questions.

It’s the service I use to post pictures…like this one:

<p](http://images.yorkphoto.com/3353559523232fp65%3Dot>2327%3D55<%3D93<%3D%3B2765%3Ab252%3B2%3A45%3D32323%3B9633638nu0mrj"><p)>(It’s a picture of my two boys standing next to a piece of the WTC. The piece is going to be made into a memorial in a local park.)

Anyway, York doesn’t currently change the picture URL every few days like FOTKI does, so it stays posted. You have 3 months to order a high-resolution picture, after that you can still order a picture, but you just get a regular print.

The prints remain on the website as long as you are using the website, which means you must order something off it once a year. They are really cheap, so I think it’s worth it.

Naturally, you wouldn’t want to store your original copies there. I learned that from the Photopoint Debacle.

Let me know what you think…I have been pleased.

Kim

Drat, they finally replied to my e-mail, only to say their service isn’t compatible with my system :frowning: So…I’m still looking. Any other suggestions out there?

Kim, you probably already know this, but there is a company that has access to the old Photopoint storage files and can burn you a CD of the photos you had stored on Photopoint…for a fee of course.

Loren

Loren, I’m not sure about the compatibility factor, but I use Bravenet for photo storage/hosting:

I hope that is of some help…

Cool Andrea, I’ll check it out, Thanks!

Yes, but fortunately, when Photopoint first started saying they were going to charge for their service, I got all my photos out of there. It was over 400 photos, but some people had it much worse. And what Photopoint did ought to be criminal. People paid to store their photos there and then Photopoint kept them unless they could pay for the CD. It happened to a few aquaintences I know. Some people had their kids pictures on there (foolish yes) and some people ran their Ebay businesses using their photo linking. When I think of the thousands of dollars people lost, it just makes me furious. Then Photopoint has the gall to charge them for the CD. It was something like $25.

Just burns me up, can you tell?

Loren-

How are you with HTML? If you are ok with that, I can help you set up a small site at Brinkster (They have free sites with no popups) where you can do your own pages. I can help you do an ASP page to register/enter/retrieve your pictures, sorted by different things if you want. Let me know, this would be a pretty easy thing to do. Then you could also do your own regular pages as well.

Aodhan

Aodhan,

Thanks for the offer. Actually, I know just about zero HTML.

The main problem for me though is that my webtv system doesn’t work like a computer, so unless a website has it’s own built-in specialized software to interface specifically with webtv, I can’t upload the photos. I can only do this via e-mail.

Picture trail has the software, but it does terrible stuff to the photos. There was a site that worked great (forget the name now) but it went belly-up. :frowning:

Kim,

Yeah, the whole Photopoint thing was disgusting, I agree with you about all of it. Just thought I’d mention the CD thing in case you hadn’t heard. Glad you got all of your stuff in time.

Loren

Loren, I have used Photofun (www.photofun.com). It worked OK for me and is free.

Brinkster is great, I use them to host some of my web pages. The problem is they don’t allow remote linking, so photos posted there couldn’t be displayed here on the forum.

Thanks Dave,

I think I tried that service a while back, but I’ll double check. Appreciate it!

Loren

Loren,
the offer still stands. I have plenty of webspace on a commercially hosted server. e-mail pics to me at tony @gate.net (note: remove the space between tony and the @) and I’ll place them in a folder just for you. No programming, rules or pop-up windows.
Just link the address to your posts or ebay ads and the picture will appear. You can easily do a listing of the files in your folder if you want to see what the folder contains.
