Is the ‘Emmigrant’ the place with strict posted rules as to who can play and all?? There are supposed to be quite a few palces to play up there from what i hear. You may want to get in touch with Avanutria or Teri Kessler; they both live up that way.
I hadn’t heard about posted rules… thats a new one. Didn’t enjoy the Emmigrant session, that enough detail for now. I’d rather find another venue where I can have an enjoyable night playing music…
I haven’t picked up this month’s Celtic Crier magazine, but if the October trend continues into November, there should be a session every night that you’re here. I haven’t actually been to ANY of them yet but I’m hoping to make tonight’s.
It might be a good idea to Google/Yahoo these places for phone numbers and double check that sessions are going on.
Here’s the info from last month’s flyer:
Tuesday - Ould Triangle, 9736 Greenwood Ave N, 8-10 PM
Wednesday - Irish Emigrant, 5260 University Way, 9:30 PM (this one says “With Leo McNamara and friends”)
Thursday - Celtic Bayou, 7281 W Lake Sammamish Pkwy NE, Redmond, 9 PM
The Celtic Bayou has a website ( http://www.CelticBayou.com/ ) so that one seems to still be accurate. There is a site someone set up last year, http://www.sessionsnw.com , but I think it’s starting to become out of date. Still good for leads though.
If all else fails I could meet you for lunch in Redmond or something; I live in that area.
Didn’t one of those Ballard pubs --either Conor Byrnes or The Tractor Tavern – change hands in the last year or so? I thought I remember hearing that Conor’s was gone, but maybe (hopefully) I’m wrong!
I remember hearing the same thing last time I was in Seattle, how there were no longer sessions at Conor Byrne’s after it had been sold… but that was over a year ago, maybe things have changed?
Ownership did change names but Conor probably still lives above the pub so it might be worth a trip. Just don’t take d’Arcy with you or you won’t get out of there until about 5AM
Don’t ya just relish the tionol-associated memories?
Sure, the instruction is great…and it’s a treat to see and hear master pipers.
But, it’s the friendships and resulting personal experiences that are quite valuable to me.
What a generally great group of people and culture associated with Uilleann piping.
To quote Tim O’Brien who somewhat altered a quote by James Kelly “What’s the point in sleepin’…” We can do that later…how many chances do ya get to see and hear Patrick d’Arcy and Conor Byrne gettin’ on with the the pipes and fiddle in Conor’s flat in the wee hours of the morn???
Back to the topic…
When I was visiting family in Seattle last month I recall a freind saying that the Owl and Thistle had sessions, but I think it was on Sundays, early (but I could have wrong day).
Owl and Thistle isn’t on the session calendar I’ve got, but that doesn’t mean anything definitive. However, their website’s event calendar gives the impression that O&T is a place for bands to come and play rather than sessions to emerge.
Looks like I’m set for going to the session at the Celtic Bayou on Thursday, does anyone know if there is still a session at the Dubliner on Fremont on Wednesday nights?
If not, anyone up for arranging an informal pub or house session on Tuesday or Wednesday night in or around the Bellevue/Redmond area? I’d love to meet more of the Seattle trad folks!
