Hoe to meet pipers in Virginia, Charlottesville area.

Hello all fellow pipers. This is my first post, though I have been an avid viewer for some time (and new piper) I am intersted in meeting some fellow pipers around Virginia, so if you are near or know someone who is, I would appricciate any help. Thanks in advance.
P.S. I’ll try to keep my posts less wordy in the future.

Well, I suppose THAT’D bring pipers to Charlottesville VA…lots of 'em.

Errr…was that a misspelling? Did I read that title line incorrectly?

are we seeing you in Oct???

I don’t recall hearing of many pipers active in Charlottesville, but then I’m very out of touch with the scene around here thanks to time constraints. You might try dropping an email to the folks over at the Blue Ridge Irish Music School ( http://www.brimstunes.org/ ) to see if they can point you in a useful direction.
Cheers,
Paul

Talk about a great incentive to learn the UPs! Just get a hoe to meet da pipers (hopefully they have been paud for).

I am sorry, I simply could not resist.

Ohhh…That sort of Hoe. I though you were planning to go chippin’ weeds in da fields.

3 pipers listed in VA, 2 of them are within 50-60 miles of Richmond

Well, I’m in Virginia(if you can count me as a piper), though not all that near Charlottesville. And there’s at least one other, up in Northern VA, Jim Wade. I go up there for sessions. See my recent post in the city guide: http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=31668
And BTW, I heard that Paddy Keenan was going to be playing in Charlottesville not too long from now, but I don’t know any details.

I live outside Chicago but will be in VA (more specifically in Williamsburg) next Wednesday through Monday. (Aug 31st to Sept 5th)

I’m no expert, but it would be fun to share a pint with a fellow piper if there were a session anywhere close-by. I could probably save a new piper from making some of the same mistakes I made…

You can pm me or use ganainm2003@hotmail.com.

Thanks!

Thanks for the input guys. It is great to know people are out there willing to help a newbie bag squeezer. Oh, and sorry for the insinuation, uh, spelling mistake.

Hey, fel bautista, what is happening in Oct?

I lived in Charlottesville for 11 years plus or minus, but when I moved to Florida four years ago, the only remaining piper in the Charlottesville area was Gil Hocker, owner of the engraved Lynch set of occassional posts (picture of your pipes thread). He is living over in Waynesboro just to the west of C’ville. Nick Whitmer, piper, pipe teacher, pipemaker, moved to New York about the same time I moved down here, but I recall there is a piper down in Lynchburg, but his name escapes me now as a hurricane spins around Florida again (should’ve stayed in Virginia).

I would definitely check with BRIMS… no pipe instruction, but more importantly, music instruction and immersion. There are regular sessions in C’ville so that you can get the music into your head while you monkey with learning the instrument.

My mother still lives a bit more than an hour away from C’ville down south of Richmond, so I would be more than happy to lend an ear or hand to helping you along when I visit her occassionally. PM me and we can swap info. Also, Bernard Grisby is across the mountains in West Virginia and could be a source a plenty for the piping beginner.

Wahoo Wah!

Actually, he came to that session I mentioned, just last week. He said he’d moved up that way. Pretty set he has.

Any idea of how to get in touch with Mr. Gil Hocker?

Try a PM from here. Gil’s UID is “gil and julie” (without the quotes, of course).

I live in the northwestern part of NC, just a few miles from the Virginia border. Galax VA is 17 miles away and my door is open to any and all uilleann pipers (or Irish musicians playing anything except accordians).
