The instructions said the test was set up so that using either British or American English would work, but I think that by that definition, some of those questions had no wrong answer…

I still giggle at “whilst” though.

I have a lower grasp of beginners’ English than Cran.

Me now go hide.

Beginner
You scored 100% Beginner, 66% Intermediate, 68% Advanced, and 55% Expert!

This score does not reflect an inability to converse intelligibly, but it does, however, reflect your inability to determine the proper spelling and/or uses of many commonly confused words of the English language. There is no reason to feel bad though. They are commonly confused, so you’re not the only one!

Still have not got it fully  , will I ever?
Brigitte

Best wishes,

Your English is really good, Brigitte. One of the differences I’ve noticed with Germans and Americans is that when somebody corrects the language of an American, it is or can be seen as disrespectful. To tell somebody “you used that word wrong” is a negative thing. However, Germans freely correct people’s language mistakes, and it’s seen as being helpful. So as a German learning English, you’re bound to make a lot of mistakes and people won’t tell you. But as an English speaker learning German, I’m bound to make a lot of mistakes, too, but I get a bit annoyed when people correct my German every other word (thus I have found myself NOT using German because I don’t want to be corrected like that). It’s a cultural difference as much as a linguistic difference.

English is a difficult language to learn, I think, because it takes the difficult parts of Romance languages and blends them with the difficult part of Germanic languages, and has completely random spelling.

And Brigitte - as an American, I find it extremely humbling how many of us can’t understand any other language but English (myself included) and how many languages people of other countries routinely speak.

It seems reading a lot has its advantages.

Yes Jens, I was that too. I only wish it were true. Or had any relevance to anything else I might try to do.

HA! If only they knew. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, maybe the 5 kids haven’t totally melted my brains!

“You scored 0% Beginner, 0% Intermediate, 0% Advanced, and 72% Expert!”

I couldn’t figure out what that score meant because I was sure my answers were corrrect, So, I followed the link at the end of the test that provides the answers. It’s the page with a picture of the author saying “would these eyes lie to you?” And just above that, it explained that sometimes the results read “0” when all the answers were actually correct. It says that can’t be helped. I think we can safely assume that the machine miscalculates the other way around too. So, all you people with “100,” well that can mean “0” as well.

Damn, I scored lower than a lot of you, and I have a DEGREE in English. HAHA!

Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

I thought I did OK untill I read Lorenzos post

Slan,
D.

Hmm.

You scored 93% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 77% Expert!

But I scored higher, in all sections, than 100% of people in my age group. I’m not sure
what that says about me, or about my generation, but there it is.

I blame the semi-colon/colon questions for wrecking my score!

(Okay, on the beginner section, I overthought a question and confused myself.)

And Brigitte, the mistakes tested for on this test are seen constantly on the internet,
so, in some sense, making those mistakes is ‘natural’ English, but not ‘proper’ English.

Remember, in English, ‘ghoti’ could be pronounced ‘fish’

([gh] from “laugh”, the [o] from “women” and the [ti] from “nation”, origination credited to Bernard Shaw).

I definitely missed everytime when it had to be one of the “all above” or similar buttons, so definitely understanding problems on my side. Jens, I am gobsmacked! VERY good!

It was fun to do it though and it would be interesting to know how the result would be, if they had the option “non-native-speakers” as well.

Was fun!
Brigitte

Cran, I am untypical German as I am often too lazy to correct Colin’s German, in fact we mostly speak English so I am profiting from his corrections

…and even now I still do not like beer and you should see the looks I get when I say so…“what German and don’t drink beer” :astonished: hehe…

Bridgett, Thanks for the word “gobsmacked”. I’ll be using it as soon as possible.

“You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 77% Expert!”

It also told me that I scored higher than 100% of people in my age group in all categories. Does it just say that to everybody? Several people have said that they were given that statistic.

It gave me all those 100% stats too. And to most of the rest of the Chiffboard. This is starting to sound statistically improbable.

I’m almost surprised there was no solicitation at the end. See, once I took the verbal iq test on the website of the International High IQ Society (yes, yes, dumb name, yes,) and I scored pretty well. Whereupon there popped up an immediate offer for me to send them $50 so I could join their bro/sisterhood of equally gullib…I mean, intelligent folk. That dampened my enthusiasm a wee regarding the validity of their iq tests.
