Mensa Puzzles: The Thread

So, I’ll post these when I think of it and we’ll see who posts the correct answer first.

Today’s puzzle:

Fill in each blank below with a word that means the same as the word on the left when read normally and fits the definition on the right when read backwards.

Comrades______________ A relatively mild variety of physical assault

Delaminates ____________ a restorative biological process

…and another:

Pat has 4 more brothers than she has sisters. Her brother Jim has two more brothers than he has sisters. How many siblings in all? (Hint: There are fewer than 10)

Pals/slap
Peels/sleep

You are correct, sir.

7 siblings

What do I get?

Interesting. That’s the number I got. However, it is NOT the answer provided by the geniuses at MENSA.

A better question, I think, than the one asked by Mensa, is how many children are their in this family? (Siblings of Pat & Jim, and including Pat & Jim.)

5 siblings?
4 male (Jim + 3 bros)
1 female (Pat)
Pat has 4 bros and no sis
Jim has 1 sis (Pat) and 3 bros (1+2)

Never mind; rh beat me again

It’s indeterminate. It could be 5, 7, or 9.

Let x be the number of girls and y the number of boys. Then the two equations are:

y = (x-1) + 4 (pat’s number of brothers is her number of sisters + 4)
x = (y-1) - 2

They both reduce to y = x + 3 . The second clue doesn’t provide any further information.

I get 9. There are 3 girls and 6 boys in the family. Calculated as follows:

Pat + 2 sisters + 6 brothers=9
Jim +3 sisters + 5 brothers=9

Brewster: I must say, you have the GREATEST avatar in the history of such things. Great Job!

Tom

Thank you, TomB. I would have preferred a movie clip of Big Papi hitting a home run as an avatar, but I settled for a B.

Just 11 days until our next New England championship. Now I’m beginning to understand what it’s like to be a greedy Yankees fan who thinks all championships rightfully belong to him…

Robin

How annoying to read Dale’s post, hastily scribble until you’ve got the answer, then scroll down to see Bloomie got there first!

I use to do these things, and take iq tests a)for fun, and b)to assess, by number, whether I really was the dumb one in the family. It was a minor obsession for a while.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find MENSA annoying?
The whole basis of the organization is to sit around and say “We’re smarter than anyone else”.
Why not a Beautiful People club?
Or a Tall People club?

It’s not just you. It’s a society of self-congratulation.

OK, got one for ya:

You have neither a measuring stick nor a timepiece. All you have is two ropes, both of which will burn up in one hour if lit at either end. Is it possible to measure exactly 45 minutes? If so, how?

I’m not a member. Which should be apparent to all of you. Someone gave me their calendar for Christmas. Puzzle-a-day.

The thing I find even more annoying than MENSA is people advertising their membership in MENSA.

But I must say, I met a very nice MENSA member once.
