BTW, the Matt Molloy Drowsie Maggie track has had hiss removal noise
reduction done so you can hear that Bb flute without distraction.

This thing is too cool, I listened to the sound clips a couple of weeks ago, and when I saw Kevin’s post one the wooden flute list today, I placed my order immediately. You should all do the same.

Loren

Thanks Loren - I figured that PayPal email was about you. I still have to confirm the non-profit’s bank account so I can transfer the funds. Your discs will go out in a day or two by 1st class post. Please be patient everyone, it’s all new procedure for me. BTW, the sound clips are of the original CD tracks, as provided by the artists & labels. They’ve all had levels set to blend well as a compilation album (no jumping for the volume control), and where allowed EQed to actually improve the sound. Matt Molloy’s track had hiss removal performed, and John Skelton’s had a microphone bump toned down. If anyone’s interested enough, I might put up a link to a PDF of the CD booklet.

Yeah, that was me Kevin. I got the shipping confirmation a few days ago and now the suspense is really getting to me - these will be the first new CD’s I’ve purchased in a long time, so I’m starving for some new flute music.

What a huge undertaking by the way Kevin, geeze, you must be a glutton for punishment! Well many thanks to you for all the effort, many of us certianly appreciate it

Tick…tock…tick…tock…

Hopefully with tomorrow’s mail…

Loren

Got mine today: Great, great stuff. Only problem; Now I want to buy like 40 or 50 more CD’s!

It’s kinda fun to use the link Kevin provided and go to the page that lists what flutes were played on many of the tunes, just for kicks.

So Kevin, you’re working on getting the next one together now right? So much good stuff on this set and yet so many great players to add! Crawford, Finnegan, Bradley, Mayock, O’Grada…and so on, plus many more of the Geezers that fools like me aren’t even aware of yet.

Hey, when others out there get this CD I’d be interested to hear which tracks different people are most drawn to, geeze there are so many…I wouldn’t know where to start!

Hey, if you’re on this message board reading this and you haven’t ordered this thing yet…geeze, you are SOOO missing out.

Loren

BTW, Niall Keegan is a total Mutant Freak - and I mean that in the very best way  Seriously, that guy scrambles my brain…

Loren,

Glad you like it. Niall, of course, is playing a traditional tune titled Dunmore Lasses paired with My Love is in America. I thought it an interesting setting.

As for the artists not on these initial 2 discs. You’re welcome to convince them or their labels to allow an appearance on a disc 3 or 4.

Why didn’t certain well-known flute-players appear?

a) No solo flute recordings legally available at the time of request.
b) Recordings not available on CD (cassette or LP only).
c) Historical recordings of questionable production quality.
d) Artist provided approval, but their label would not allow use.
e) Label provided legal approval, but artist requested I decline to use.
f) Label would not approve use.
g) Artist or label unreachable.
h) Artist declined, usually without reason given.

You should recall the nature of this compilation, which solicited sound recordings that could be donated to the non-profit. That’s an arrangement that may not have been contractually possible for an artist or label. Many musicians do not control their own tracks or even compositions.

Thats my Hoza 5 key on the cover. Totally cool! International orders possible? Thanks.

Cooktown Ironwood. International orders by Global Priority Mail at $29 U.S. Canadian, though, is same postage as U.S. (not really, but close enough).

Tot’s,

You know, I actually recognized that as being your flute as soon as I opened the CD liner notes - your flute is now quasi famous!

Interesting setting? There’s an understatement!

As for the other stuff, yeah, freakin’ record companies :frowning: Hopefully you’ll hold a little more
sway once this this CD set get’s out there. Of course, that’s not going to change any roadblocks that are contractual in nature.

Well, I’ll do my part and lobby my favorite artists who didn’t make it on this CD set, not that I’m anyone they’d much listen to, but hey, it’s worth mentioning.

So how many of you out there have ordered this thing so far?

Mine shipped yesterday.

I feel like a kid at Christmas waiting for it to get here!

I ordered mine and it’s sitting right at home waiting for me. Just a thought, any Michael Tubrity fans out there? Anyways I’m going home this weekend and I have to wait that long to listen to it. LOL. But I’m sure it will be more than worth the wait.

Ohhh, Yeahhhh… Hope it gets here soon! Thanks, y’all, for the heads up! I’m sure it will be all the inspiration I’ll need for the next few months…
Mary

I have had it since Saturday and love it. One of my favorites is on there playing a song I have never heard.
I have always loved the playing of Cathal McConnell but have never purchased his Solo CD because of too much whistle and singing and not enough flute.
I love his composition that’s included in the CD set. It’s great and now I think I’ll pick up his CD “Long Expectant Comes at Last” just for the few other flute tunes he has.

How could anyone not love this guy!?

Over all the CD is outstanding. I only wish I could afford all the albums the songs came from.

First CD I’m going to buy when I can afford it is the Josie McDermott “Darby’s Farewell” disc. What a shame he’s gone, damn that man could make a dead man’s foot tap…no stomp! What drive and lift to his playing!

Gotta catch Mike Rafferty while he’s still with us, that’s for sure.

And who’s this Barry Kerr cat? He plays like a man possesed, Krikey!!!

Vellion… what can you say? I mean really? I’ll be looking out for Silvain Barou’s release too, I dig that Bretton influence. Hey Kevin, did Sylvain give you any idea when that CD would be out? I didn’t see anything on his website. (Nice reel, by the way, Brendan)

Obviously Skip Healy has Chops on top of his Chops, the epitome of precision, plus he’s got that unique tone.

Was anyone else bowled over by John Skelton’s tone on that air?

I can’t belive I still don’t have any of McGoldrick’s solo CD’s, been meaning to get them for ages and this reminded me why.

Geeze, I could go on all day…

Barry Kerr is a young guy from the north. I met him late last year (or maybe early this year. it’s all a blur) just as he was starting a US tour with Na Dorsa (he had joined the group just the day before).
Plays a Sam Murray flute. His “Three Sisters” get pretty frequent play in my house. I like his style. Very smooth, not hard edged and yet he still manages to articulate each note.

No, but I’ll ask him when we next email over the CD.

He also performed this on his CD “One at a TIme”, but rights were a problem. He offered the live performance, subject to the sound engineer’s approval. It took 6 months for the Harry Fox Agency to clear Freeland Barbour’s composition through MCPS. Someone bumped into a microphone, but the mastering engineer tried to minimize it.

Get them, as well as the new duet CD with John McSherry.

For those having any preference for Amazon.com as a source, they are
now carrying the Wooden Flute Obsession CDs. Still about 350 copies
left from the run before it goes out-of-print.

I got this CD the other day (thanks pixyy!) and having heard it a bit now, I must say it’s a very nice compilation. As it turns out, I already have the original CDs for quite a few of the tunes, but there’s plenty of new great stuff for me here.

Now I’ll wait for the Obsession 2 CD!

Which do you like better, the original of Drowsie Maggie on Matt Molloy’s Heathery Breeze CD, or the noise reduction on WFO?

Starting on it. The IRS finally made a favorable determination on the tax-exempt non-profit status.

Any suggestions for players on WFO discs 3&4? Any local contacts?
