There’s a piano competition based in Kalamazoo, Michigan where the competitors don’t even know they’re competing (http://gilmore.org/). The pianists just play in their normal environment, the concert hall, and tapes of their performances are sent to a select group of Gilmore jurors. Once jurors agree on the most outstanding performances, they secretly go to observe the pianists at more recitals and orchestra concerts. Eventually they narrow it down to to one pianist. The pianist is then surprised with a prize worth half-a-mil, a series of major concert dates, and a week of adulation at the city’s 10-day piano festival.
I was thinking it could be adapted to some degree here…
How about those wishing to be considered for a “best reel,” “best jig,” “best air” prize submit their tunes anonymously? That way, votes won’t be influenced by the popularity (or lack thereof)of the poster.

Best Wisecrack
Best Prose-like serious answer
Best Filthy Song title giver
Best Poster of animated grafix
Best Annoyer with automated sound files
Best Frequent Poster of unviewable pix (yeah I win that one!)_
Best frequency of Double Entendre
Best Obscure Location of origin
etc etc..
I mean, reel or jigs???
If you listen to enough posts (or cd’s for that matter), you learn to recognize individuals’ styles. It would be very difficult to disguise your playing.
Nevertheless, if people want to do this as anonymous posts, it would be easy to arrange. We’d need a deadline of about 1-2weeks. I will point out that there was an attempt at a Tune-of-the-Week awhile back that flopped badly for lack of participation. Someone would suggest a tune and people would send in their version. I deleted the page when flies gathered. I think, w/ some better parameters, it might still fly. People submitted suggestions for tunes that were somewhat demanding and didn’t even post themselves. It could be tested with easy tunes to start. Anyway, it shriveled and died. This contest venture will only fly if enough people get up the guts to compete. We may need categories where people put themselves in beginner, intermed, advanced, virtuoso, ubermensch, whathaveyou. Just some thoughts…(wet blankets).

ANOTHER awards show!!! How about a remake of “Titanic”, instead? Excuse me while I run screaming from the room…
I spent more than half my career in law enforcement. While it might not seem like there are parallels, one trait performers, cops and soldiers share is some deep-seated psychological need to endlessly give each other awards. Its like they didn’t get enough hugs from mommy or gold stars from their first grade teacher.

It would have to be “the fipples” or “the golden fipples” or “the soggy fipples” everyone who posted would be entered so there would be no problem with participation, the contributions would probably increase.
as far as a tune of the week I was thinking weeks ago that no-one posted their versions of Dale’s “tune of the month” on the clips site. It would be cool if everyone learned the tune of the month and submitted their version. (All this coming from someone who is yet to post anything on the clips site)
I WILL commit to be a seat filler at the proposed awards at the very least.
I think Pro - Session Player - novice - beginner categories or something like that would be good.
I also would appreciate a best player from Northwest Indiana Category (I could use an ego boost)
oh and I might be able to handle a best bald player from Northwest Indiana I should have a fair chance.
OK best Balding Carpenter Whistle Player from Northwest Indiana. That I could Handle.
only, if you did that, then you would have as many categories as contestants and the awards ceremony could take weeks, so I’ll leave that alone.

You missed the Advertising industry Chuck.
There’s nothing an advertising agency likes better than a hearty round of backslaps and ego squatthrusts for just doing their jobs like everybody else. Tchah. Some corners of this building I work in should be designated slip and trip hazard zones, there’s so much drool on the tacky plastic awards and certificates. They even give their ads names to help the judging panel.
