Susato: Dublin vs. Kildare

I love my Susato Dublin, and am considering adding a Kildare (or possibly a Kildare set) to the collection. What I’m wondering is, are there differences between the two models other than the obvious ones (appearance, tunability, etc.)? Any noticible differences in tonality, responsiveness, hole size/configuration, etc.?

Might help if I tell you what I particularly like about my Dublin:

  1. I like the clear, bright, “open-throated” sound.

  2. I like the lack of “shrillness” in the upper part of the second octave.

  3. I like the shape of the mouth-piece. It’s very comfortable, and I have yet to have it clog on me.

  4. Something about the size/shape of the tone holes makes this whistle particularly easy to half-hole accurately, which I greatly appreciate.

Any thoughts out there from someone who owns or has played both models? If this discussion has taken place before, just point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks,

Redwolf

Redwolf I have a susato D-C-Bb set, I think it’s kildare, that you are welcome to borrow. email me. =)

I don’t have a Dublin, however, I do have a Kildare. I like it very much for performances and ‘jam-sessions’ because the tuning is quite precise, and it has enough volume to not get ‘lost.’ Nice 2nd octave, too, with a nice, strong bottom D.

Personally, I’d say, that if you like the Dublin, you’ll probably like the Kildare.

I prefer the look of the Dublin, but I detect a very slight improvement on sound/stability in the Kildare. I think the additional mass (plastic) adds to a slight increase in fullness of sound.

I got lots of miles out of my old D/C/Bb Kildare set.

I love my Kildare D VSB, but it clogs all the time. Maybe it’s something I’m doing…

I’m thinking of trying the soap thing.
