Susato Dublin soprano D comments

I,d just like to make a few comments on my new Susato Dublin D soprano non-tunable.Very attractive looking ivory barrel and tan head, perfectly in tune with itself,Cnat is spot on with OXXOOO fingering, excellent chiff, clear loud voicing, good tonal balance and note definition, plays and seals easily. No,it does not match Overton or Kerry for harmonic complexity and workmanship but for a whistle that costs only a little more then a Generation, this is one hell of a good deal!Anyone else like the Dublin? Peace,Mike

I’ve got the Dublin vsb sop D all black. I have to take greater care with my breath control and tone hole sealing on ornamentation to get a squeakless overall tone, but I’m glad I got the Dublin instead of the two piece. I had money left over to buy a vsb high G, which I demonstrate on Clips and Snips Reels.

I don’t play any of my other cheapie D whistles anymore.

I’ve never played the Dublin whistles but I do own a Kildare 3 piece set (Eb,D,C) and I like them very much. The only thing I’ve notices is they have a tendency to play sharp overall, so its a good thing for me to have gone with the tunable model. I do play with quite a lot of breath pressure though, so maybe the sharpness is just from my play style. Overall, I’d have to say you get great whistle for you dollar from Susatos, although they do sound a bit different from other inexpensive whistles that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Just different.

An interesting and noteworthy difference between the Dublin and Kildare is the hole positioning.I had always assumed they were essentialy the same whistle with one being tunable, the other not, and also noticed the Kidare,s tendency to blow sharp particularly the G hole. Not so with the Dublin, this is the most in -tune whistle I have ever played, even the octaves are in tune which is simply not possible on a generation and only just so on a kildare by blowing harder in 2nd oct.Anyone dissapointed with a Kildare would do well to check out a Dublin and be amazed.:)Peace,Mike

My own ‘personal’ whistle, at the moment - for playing in small trad. group - is the ‘creamy’ coloured Dublin. Needless to say, I have over 20 types of whistles to choose from, but use one of these myself because its loud (good for competeing with the pipes), in tune (good for not getting lambasted by the flute player), has a rich round sound (good for when playing solo) and is comparatively inexpensive (good for not using up all my profits!)

What? You’re making profits, Steve? You Captialist Pig.

I have a Dublin VSB E, F and G in black, and they are really good little whistles. They are not as quiet as one would think, and they don’t have quite the “recorder” like tone that other Susatos have. They are really a good deal for the money.

Scott,do you mean Eb or is there in fact an E Dublin available? Mike

It is an E, which I like a lot due to the fact that I play guitar, and that’s a great key for guitarists. Eb is available, but I don’t use that key very often.

Scott,I was just thinking the other day how useful an E whistle would be for exactly the same reason you mentioned. Thanks for the tip! Mike

Mike, here’s a link to Susato - http://www.susato.com/. I called Mike Kelischek and ordered the Dublins in all black. I actually reach for and play the E as much as any D I have now.

Thanks Scott.Wonders never cease…G# XXOXXX fingering is spot on in 1st oct! Mike

Yes, and for G#(on my Kildare D), in the 2nd octave, it’s XXO XOO.

Bb in 1st is XOX XOO, and in the 2nd, XOX OOO.

In tune on them as far as I know too.

And actually, I’d like to try/hear a VSB played, but I don’t think I need another Susato. Mine is working very well, and wherever I play on it, I get comments on the intense, crystal tone on it. I’ve actually only had 2 people, wait, no, 3 people say it sounded a little like a recorder. One person didn’t know any better and called it that by mistake.

Does anyone know how the V & S models differ?Different bore perhaps? Can anyone comment on alto and low dublin models, particularly Bb and low D hole spacing and playability? Thanks. Peace,Mike
