Are there any sound differences between the Susato Whistle models…one is the one piece Dublin, the other and the most popular according to their website is the Kildare. I know the bore is different between the 2 and the Kildare is thought to be the session model. But if you played both can you tell any differences sound wise?

I’d be curious to know as well, which is why I found this thread. ![]()
I’ve only ever played their tunable models. Nice whistles, but loud. It’s my renaissance festival whistle of choice when I play outdoors for Irish dancers.
I recall the maker used to post here, and he said the difference in bores is purely caused by the one versus two piece casting method. He said the sound was the same.

Yes, that’s right. Actually, Mike Kelischek allowed me to post his private comments to me. I’ll see if I can dig up the post.

While we are on the topic, I would like to ask the more experienced members about Susato design changes. I acquired an older Kildare high D recently. This is only the second Susato D I have played and it has several small differences from my other Kildare D. The bell ring is thinner. The joint has only one groove for the O ring; there are no other adjustment grooves. The head is more rounded and the sides of the window taper into the body instead of ending with squared off corners.
They sound different too. This older design seems a bit louder and has a clear, less complex tone. However, I’m not sure that anyone would hear that difference more than a few feet away. Now for the question. Is this sound difference due to the small design changes or is it due to the natural variations that others have mentioned in previous posts?
I have a high E Dublin and both a B and an A Kildare (tuneable). The Kildare B and the Dublin E both seem smoother and sweeter than I’ve heard Susatos described. The Kildare A is edgier and louder and fits general description of Susatos. These are the only Susatos I’ve played and, given Susato’s reputation for consistency, I’d say the differences are more from key to key and not between the Kildare and Dublin lines. FWIW, the B and E didn’t improve much with the O-ring mod. The A’s upper register smoothed out a little, as advertised, with the O-ring but I had to push it up the head so it straddles the windway rather than resting on the “notch.”
