Surplus: Chieftain and Shaw Low D Whistles.

Between the flute, mandolin, and tenor banjo (and of course whistle), I just don’t play low whistle enough to justify owning my two.

And there’s something sad about perfectly good instruments no one plays; I can feel their silent reproach.

So I’m offering them for sale, if anyone’s interested. Both are in “as new” condition. I bought them about ten years ago, but only played them for a month or so before my first flute arrived, and they were rudely shouldered aside in my affections.

The chieftain is brushed aluminum, straight bore. It has a nice “hooty” tone. If this is to be your first low whistle a Chieftain is the more sensible choice, being a little easier to fill.

The Shaw is conical bore with a wooden fipple. It has the lovely, chiff-rich tone of the conical bore and a surprising amount of power. It’s always reminded me of the littlest pipes on a church organ, for some reason. However, it takes an almighty amount of air. This would not be a good choice for a low whistle newbie, although you get used to it after a while.

Shipping isn’t much of an issue with a items of this size, so I could send them anywhere, although at the moment they’re in Vancouver (Canada).

I’d sell them together or seperately. $75 each or best offer. You pay actual postage.

The Chieftain is spoken for, with a backup, so I think that one way or another it’s off the market.

The Shaw is still available. It really does have a gorgeous tone for slow airs. I wonder if Dave’s quality control has slipped in the decade since I bought it–mine was made back when he was primarily a pipe-maker who made only a few whistles; I understand he’s moved more toward mass production.

Too true.
I just wish my neglected family members would reproach me more silently when I spend so much time on my music.

Hope you find a good home for your Shaw. Even my wedding ring was bought at a pawn shop; I like giving things a second chance.

Jennie

And a new home has been found for the Shaw. Thanks everyone.
