Comment’s about Spillane chanters , tonal/overall quality ,reeding..etc
I had understood from other threads that he was not making pipes anymore, and had taken down his web site.

Listen to his recordings, he plays his own instruments.
I have a Spillane chanter that I picked up from someone. it has needed a new reed since I bought it but I never got around to it to get an idea of its tonal quality. If anyone is interested in buying it let me know.

Joseph,
Davey did make pipes but not as much as one might assume. His dad Des made pipes for him while he was away on tour, which was quite often.
He made the set he plays nowadays and on each album it advertises Spillane pipes with his trade name, concert D 100, or something like that.
Doesn’t mean that if you orderd a set that Davey made them himself.
I don’t want to infer that Des Spillane was a poor pipe maker OR that Davey is a great one either but Davey’s dad died around 1995 so I’m not sure who makes them now or if Davey is doing it all himself.
Anyway on most of his very early recordings, he uses his Willie Rowsome set and later the same set with a Johnny Bourke chanter.
I couldn’t say exactly when he started playing his own pipes.
I’ve seen a few of his chanters up close they were ok. One person that I was teaching got a half set for Davey, not great. He sent them back.
We all have our bad drones days…
