If someone wants to turn this into a half set, Par K (ojvoj) might sell his Davy Spillane drones
as he is getting a new Rogge full set any day now.

Is the camera playing tricks or is the neck on that bag somewhat short?
Is it a Highland pipe bag?
Naw, I think that the neck is just a bit wider than the average UP bag.
Maybe, Joseph, but it still looks a funny shape to me. There doesn’t seem to be enough from the blowpipe back - although that’s the bit that never gets squeezed, I guess.
Could just be the angle of the shot playing tricks on your eyes. Does look a bit thick though.
anybody know anything about spillane chanter, wondering if they any good, tone and tuning. ![]()
D. Spillane plays his own work, I recommend you check out any of his recordings for a sound sample.
His website: http://www.davyspillane.com/
The only problem about checking out Davy’s recordings is that they are so heavily processed, it’s difficult to know what’s the chanter and what’s mixing.
The only real way to check out Davy’s chanters is to do so in person… not an easy thing to do if you don’t have access to one, or one’s geography is against them. His recordings are obviously mixed, but at the very least, they ought to give you some idea of what the instrument sounds like.
His most recent release, forgotten days, with Kevin Glackin, seems to be relatively ‘clean’ and would give a good sense of how his pipes sound. However, from what I recall, he served an apprenticeship with Johny Doran. That ought to count for a lot.
I would suggest you attempt to find a reed maker that has successfully reeded a Spillane chanter. k
I heard that Kevin Thompson used to make reeds for Davy Spillane. But that was from the guy that sold me a Thompson practice set so I don’t know how much weight you could give it. The Thompson set is great, though.
Hello Chanterdan see your PM.
Ole
Seeing as how Johnny Doran’s been dead for fifty-odd years, that would indeed count for a lot.
I think the person you were referring to was Johnny Bourke and that does indeed count for something…although apprenticing with a great pipemaker does not necessarily mean that the person in question is a great pipemaker…Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Davy can make a mean set of pipes, but if I were in the market for a new practice set, I’m not sure if he’d be my first pick…
