Regarding the half set, I’ve heard that DS’s work was very good. However, does it look strange to anyone else that the tenor and baritone drones have artificial ivory mounts but the bass drone (particular the resonator) seems to be of blackwood?
Unless I am mistaken, the mounts are likely holly, and the dark Bass Drone Resonator was a reasonably common feature of Davy’s sets.
I have a practice set by Davy Stephenson with the same birds eye maple bellows. Lovely workmanship.
The chanter honks like a goose in heat, which is fine if you like that sort of thing, but I am lost to the flat side of the Force.

Nothing wrong with Davy Stephenson Pipes,the Chanter is of
the same spec as the Punter Hunter Concert D bore, takes the same reed,I know I’ve got one of each, 
this set new now, would cost at least £1500, his sets were turned by hand with the chisel on a woodturnig lathe ,not made on an Engineering lathe,which a lot of pipe makers use today,the bellows and bag are of the finest quality,you can’t buy any better quality,looks like some one might get a bargain. 
… can you substantiate this…you know, the part about other makers not using a wood turning lathe?
A lot of makers use Myford 7’s lathes, or Engeering lathes to make there pipes,some makers work with both wood and engineering lathes,Davey Stephen used nothing else but a home made lathe,made from box section, with a head stock and tail stock,tool rest, and a motor,nothing fancy, ‘O’ other gear, roughing out chisel, parting tool, and a spidal gouge,and home made reamers,
of course Davey Stepenson and Peter Hunter were Buddies. 
And so, armed with this opinion, you feel fortified enough to proclaim that all other pipemakers (known and unknown) use lathes that are not designed for turning wood?
Somehow, this isn’t convincing enough for me. You’d better down that comforting evening glass, and get some sleep Reed dude, you can rebute this in the am.

Nowhere did he say “all other pipemakers.” He said “a lot of pipe makers,” which i would guess to be true (if somewhat open to interpretation.)

But no, I don’t need that comforting evening glass of comfort, nor will I be rebuting anything in the am to the chiff & fipples master reed maker and piping expert of all time, 
if he were to take note of pipe makers web sites, you can see Engineering lathes being used in there work shops, and “yes” now you mention it,
I like being a dude, I sleep no bother in the lovely English evening air. 
Yes, open to interpretation… and also truer than I may be aware of… but doesn’t that even sound to you more like opinion than fact? C’mon. :roll:

VERY, I making a set of pipes at the moment, touche, touche’s not the word,
Engineering or Metal lathes function just fine as woodturning lathes. No sense in putting down a lathe because it’s more accurate. Many can be and are fitted with a tool rest for doing hand work. What it really comes down to is how well the piece is made, not what it’s made on.

A lot of half sets have been going for under £1000 recently.
There is another 2 on ebay at the moment (search under uillean, not uilleann and you will find them) - they will probably go for less than this as well.
One of the bidders on the set (bassregulator) got a half set by Ginsberg in B not so long ago for under £800 (he just beat me for it 
). I got a left handed full set for not much 
.
Hopefully the successfull bidder will appear here to announce his good purchase.

I bought the full set off ebay from a shop in Germany. It was one of your posts that brought it to my attention. I had never seen a left handed pakistani set, so at the price I got it for (999 euros) I thought that it would be possible to salvage at least a half set out of it. It is a left handed set, the chanter keys, bag etc are set up for a left handed player, as I am only likely to use the Cnat key the chanter is no problem (I am right handed).
When the set arrived it was handed over to Jim for him to tinker with. tweak and reed (in between making his own sets). He says that the set is well manufactured, and questions that it is wholly pakistani, he thinks that it has been assembled from a variety of sources.
I had a go at the chanter when I took him my new Ginsberg B chanter to reed (it was sold without a reed) and it plays well with one of Jim’s standard reeds. He played the drones for me (individually - the set is still in bits), they play in C, C# and D. He thinks that the drones are actually C# rather than D (if so I am definately not complaining, C# chanter next on the shopping list). The consensus is that I will get at the very least a working 3/4 set out of it. As I am probably at least 2 years away from even attempting to play a full set, then I can wait for Jim to be satisfied with his tweaking.
