As I’m sure you “regulars” can tell, I don’t post very often but I have been reading and learning from all of you grand Chiff& Fipplers for about a year.
I just returned from an evening of irish music and just had to gloat a little.
I got to spend over two hours in a small coffee house in Saratoga called Cafe Lena’s listening to Aoife Clancy, Danu and Larry Nugent. IMHO, it can’t get a whole lot better than that. I knew that Aoife and Danu were going to be there but Larry Nugent was a surprise and was definately the icing on the cake.
Think I’ll sit back, close my eyes, tip-a pint, and relive the evening in my mind.
Grrr… I’ve seen Aoife and Larry Nugent but not Danu! Somehow they’ve escaped me. That must have been one heck of a show for sure!! One of my favorite reels is the first on their CD “Are you ready yet?”… darn good stuff. Larry is absolutely brilliant live isn’t he? He has a style all to his own. I love it. Did he pull the “slide the whistle in the mouth to change pitch” trick? He does all sorts of trick ornamentation. Crazy guy indeed.
Glad you got to catch the show.
Chris

Danu will be playing Johnny D’s in Somerville this week then Irish Times in Worcester on Sunday. I’m hoping to make both if the boss (wife) gives me the nod…
Hey Chris, have you been to the session at The Green Briar in Brighton on Monday nights yet? I’ve been doing the slow session (starts at 7:00) for a year and then the Big Boys roll in at 9:00. Great bunch of players and the craic can be mighty. As far as that Nugent fellow goes, he can make you toss those whistles and flutes in the recycle bin. Can a player be too good? Best to all of you in the Club of Chaff and Flapple!
Paulie
This was the first time I have seen Nugent in person and I was just awe-struck.He does so much with the whistle and flute I can’t begin to remember it all. Will definitely be watching more closely next time I see him.
While Danu doesn’t have much whistling in their playing, they have a kick-a flute player(floutest, flatalist, whatever) named Tom Doorley, and the lead singer, Ciaran O’Gealbhain learned from Liam Clancy and you can hear Liam in his voice.
They have a new cd coming out (“not in the shops yet” as they said) that they were selling at the concert called All Things Considered. For those of you who enjoy Trad session band music, I highly recommend them.
Now I’m going to retrieve my whistles from the dumpster and get back to practice, practice, practice!
