Hi All,
I caught Danu at Johnny D’s in Somerville last night and it was one of the best shows I’ve been to in a long time. They play absolutely awesome music and have a such a great time doing it… what fun. The lads are a great bunch as well - friendly, enthusiastic and kind.
Tom Doorly, the unbelievably good flute player from the band, is no longer playing the Seery flute he had been playing, but instead one of the most gorgeous Olwells I’ve ever seen, which he receive about a week ago. It’s a fully keyed Pratten model in Cocus wood. He couldn’t say enough good about it, nor could anyone else who tried it.
A special thanks goes to Brendan McCarthy, the accordionist, who gave me their first CD for free since I was strapped for cash.
Afterwards I went and pretended to play (I listened, more or less) down at the Burren for a while and after closing I went to a session at Peter Molloy’s house. What an absolutely, rediculously great time. Again, I more or less listened, while the flautists in the session put away their flutes and took out the F whistles for a mindbendingly beautiful session. There were three F whistles, a guitar and a fiddle going at once.
Now, I’ve got to hand it to all the Overton lovers - I finally understand why. Peter had two low F whistles made by Colin and they were beyond superb. One had belonged to Mike McGoldrick and the other to Paddy Keenan. These whistles practically played themselves. They were everything I’ve ever wanted in a whistle and not had. If I knew Colin made whistles like that I would have bought Overton’s from the start. The problem is that the Overton’s I’ve come in contact with have not been anywhere near that good. Perhaps I should buy one direct from Colin himself.
Anyways, sorry for the rambling. I’m still charged from such an awesome night.
Chris
