hey, I haven’t been on in a while, but I’m just wondering if anyone’s seeing the Chieftains on March 8 in NJ.
Let me know,
OMG, what I wouldn’t give to go. I’ve long dreamed of going to see the Chieftains perform. After I first discovered the whistle, they were the first celtic band I listened to. I purchased their album… “The Long Black Veil” by recommendation, and was NOT dissapointed. Still own it, still love it.
The only live concert I will have ever been able to attend, is the upcoming Cherish the Ladies Concert in Springfield, MO. I am excited beyond belief, but I still dream of getting to see the Chieftains… my very first inspiration to keep playing!!! ![]()
Take care,
John
Oh, no I’m not going, but there’s a nice long OT post for you anyway! ![]()
If anyone hasn’t seen the Chieftains live, they should take the opportunity. Terrific band, even without the late Derek Bell. I saw them years ago in Schenectady and they had a young step dancer with them ( as do many Irish bands). I had no idea that there would be a dancer but all of a sudden, during the second go-round of a brisk reel, he simply exploded from the wings and started dancing. I had never seen step dancing live, and was totally blown away. Turns out it was Michael Flately before he became the LOTD..
Unfortunately, the Chieftains have gotten pretty pricey in recent years and I’ve passed on their return trips to this area-- can only go to just so many concerts ( going to see Bela Fleck and the Flecktones 3/22). Still, anyone interested in IRTRAD should see the Chieftains at least once.
John-- don’t feel bad about “only” seeing Cherish the Ladies. In their own way, they are every bit as good as anyone out there. You will LOVE the show, guaranteed. Hint-- slip a McHaffie or two in your pocket for afterwards…
Is it still true they have the locals join in at the end?
Seen them twice. Played with them once. Drank with them MUCH! ![]()
Fun bunch of guys, though Paddy high tailed it out of the hall as soon as he put his pipes down after the encore. Still, I’ve got an autographed Halpin drum with scribbles from Kevin, Séan and Matt. Not TOO shabby…

Their live DVD will keep me busy for a while. I love it!
I don’t think they will be around here soon to pay a visit. I’m sure going to see them when they’re close.
The little tune Paddy plays in front of his grandparents house is just … stunning.
It looks like he has a little bird in his hands instead of a whistle, just beautiful.
yes, I did that actually. It was mad good.
Brewerpaul,
I’m seeing the Flecktones tomorrow night! They’re amazing.
