Chieftains in California 2006

The Chieftains will be at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City, California on Saturday, January 28, 2006. I already have my tickets and I suggest if you haven’t seen them live, it is not to be missed.

I had the pleasure of playing with them at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco way back in 2000 and hanging out with them again at Stanford in 2003. They are the nicest folks you could ever hope to meet.

BTW: Paddy Moloney just won the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame Award. See: http://www.tradmusichall.com/PaddyMoloney.htm

Slainte! Richard

Ah, do I go to see the Chieftains in January or to Lunasa at the Freight and Salvage in early Feb or Patrick Street in late Feb?
It’s a 6-8 hour round trip for me, so I don’t expect to see all of them. I saw the Chieftains two years ago (and have a hard time with their country collaborations and the like) but they may not be doing this much longer.

Decisions, decisions.

Andrew

I saw the Chieftains this past year. A little stale if you ask me. That Galician piper dude was outta control. Lunasa is becoming too predictable for me. I’d go see Patrick Street. They’re liable to throw some cool things at ya.

It’s an odd schedule they seem to have this year for their US tour… most of January, then nothing in February, then all of March.

Still, it’s a grueling schedule, and let’s face it, they’re not getting any younger (though who among us is?) …

Chieftains have been known as one of the hardest working groups of all time. For a long while, they had a three week on, three week off schedule. As guest artists, they always astonished the host by having the music ‘ready to go’.

Who knows how long they will continue but they won’t be taking off March in the near future!

And I see that Matt Malloy has opened a new pub in Manchester… NEW HAMPSHIRE.

I was happy to have caught them back in 87’ when Derek Bell (RIP) was with them. I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and Derek played a mean ragtime on the piano as I recall.

One thing, Kevin sang a song about a fella who stays at the house of a man who was fond of taxidermy and would salt anything dead. I haven’t been able to find the song since, of course, I never found out the title of it.

Anybody here know the song I am talking of, and where I could find it?

THanks.

I would like to see the Chieftains again. The last time was in the mid 80’s. Derek Bell was a fantastic musician.

I do love the Chieftains earlier stuff, but not so much of the “cross-over” music they have performed more recently. As a youngman of 42 I prefer Lunasa over the Chieftains tis just my thought. With that said if the Chieftains were coming close, I would definitely go (schedule permitting). I think the upcoming tour they will be as close a Cincinnati, OH. but that is close to an 8 hour drive.
