Some of you might rememember my “sad story” post from the summer about my 8-year wait for Sam Murray to repair/replace my 4-key flute.
I got a phone call from Sam this morning, who said he would send me a check or a keyless flute and a smaller check. He had to ring off becuase somebody was at his door and said he’ll call next week to see which I want. I think I’ll go for the latter, since, as I’ve reported before, I’m playing on a borrowed flute now (my sister’s 4-key Murray like my missing one). It will be nice to have my own flute while I wait for an Olwell or some other flute with keys.
Happy ending in sight, I hope.
Thanks to all again for your commiseration and advice.
I can’t believe you’re considering taking another one of his flutes…What happens if you have another problem?
I’ve got nothing against Sam - I’ve never met or dealt with him - I just can’t imagine having a similar problem with ANY maker and then accepting another one of his flutes.
If on the other hand you want to sell me that Murray once it arrives, well that would be another matter
Hi Tim,
That’s good news, I hope it all works out for you. You must really like Sam’s flute’s to take another after what has already happened. I’d be inclined to agree with Loren but I suppose if “I” really wanted something I do just what you’re doing. I got to try a keyless Murray earlier this year, but as I had’nt started to play the Flute myself I just sort of messed around and I could’nt have made a valid comment on it. The guy who owned it had it made in Boxwood, I think, it was like a honey colour with dark grains. I love to try it again to see how it compares with my own cheap (Pakistani?) flute.
Well, the only reason I’d consider getting another flute from Sam is that a flute in the hand… And he certainly makes great instruments.
But if anything goes wrong with it, I realize I’ll have to get it repaired nearby.
By the way, Sam told me he was closing up shop, selling his house, and movign to Galway! He said he was fed up with Belfast. Perhaps the change of locale will improve his business practices.

Hi Tim
Was just wondering if Sam said WHEN he was actually moving. I’m currently waiting for a keyless flute from him which is due to be ready this month. However, having read previous posts about Sam’s reliability to deliver on time I’ll probably still be waiting this time next year! The fact that he is moving from my home town unnerves me somewhat, so I’d like to know how long I’ve got left to access him in person.
In fact…its probably my flute that he’s offering you! Personally I think you’d be better off taking the cheque!!
Cheers
