Murray Flutes

I tought about signing up for a Sam Murray flute soon. £675 for a six key blackwood is darn cheap. Wait is only 12 months (max). I can’t believe it. John Wynne plays one of his flutes and sounds great. I would have guessed demand for those flutes were a lot higher and therefor higher price and longer wait. This looks like a real bargain in present state.
Any toughts, comments? Would be happy to get some oppinions from more experienced players.

Cheers

Lot’s of very fine players are using Murray flutes, quite a few indeed. I’ve seen the figure you listed as the price for a Murray six key, but find it a bit hard to believe that’s current. Let us know if you find out for certain.

Now isn’t this frustrating! I’m sure I had the adress for his website. I’m sure I checked the prices there at least ten times. I’m sure that the website was updated not long ago. Now I can’t find it!! How the heck is that possible. Have I just dreamed the hole thing?! The only resorce I have now is the list of flute makers on A guide to the irish flute. They say that they cost £675 for a 6keyed and wait is 12 months but that might not be the current price. They don’t list a website. Now I’m really puzzled. I know I had his website up just a few days ago.

(And I know people is going to start make conections to my avatar for this :stuck_out_tongue: )

Okay, time for you to lay off the whiskey - better send me your supply, I’ll keep an eye on it for ya until you dry out.

Seriously, far as I know, Sam Murray does not now, nor has he ever, had a website.

Loren

I’ve had exactly the thought you had and researched this in the last few weeks. Loren’s right, there is no web site and it appears that he prefers to be rung or snail mailed rather than emailed.

I don’t know if the prices are current; I haven’t got that far yet. Do a search of the board. Actually, better would those with first hand knowledge please comment. One thread is full of praise. Another expresses a great deal of frustration over trying to deal with Sam Murray. I, for one, would like to know which experience is typical.

The contact info on Brad Hurley’s site “Flutemakers” list is correct, so give Sam a call. Regardless of any problems reported in the past about substantial delivery time slippage, I believe that a more organized workshop has been setup in his new Galway location.

The quoted price of £675 is obviously out of date, by at least a year. This would translate to about $1,200 if the £675 refered to British pounds.
Sam’s work can be great. It can also vary quite a bit.
BTW I am very happy with the Copley six-key that I just bought.

For God’s sake, ring Sam!

Regards,

Harry Bradley.

Ah, but that would make too much sense, wouldn’t it?

Loren

Just give Sam a ring, he will be more than happy to help you and point you in the right direction. I have several flutes from Sam which are all first class insturments, well made and really big sounding right up to the 3rd octive, clear as crystal. I have tried lots of other makers flutes some of which have really impressed me but I always go back to my Murray which I find hard to beat. When you have players like Harry, Barry Kerr, Micheal Clarkson, ect… all playing Sams flutes, it tells you all you need to know.

But Hey folks, thats just my point of veiw be it right or wrong.

SLAN

For all my nattering about playing what you have, a Murray would be my other dream flute. Those suckers just thunder! I’ve hesitated pursuing it though as I too have heard you have to stand over Sam to get the thing finished. Although like you said, maybe this is solved in his new workshop.

LOL, Harry! Let’s all ring him up, shall we?

cat.

So, anyone called Sam yet?

Loren

Hello, new to this site. The Murray flute posts caught my att, am scouting for a reliable wooden flute that does not get lost twixt the fiddle and piano. Presently have a silver haynes but now mostly play a M&E.

My Q is: address for Sam Murray??

Thanks, Peter

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but I was just wondering if somebody had Sam’s e-mail adress if he has one. It would be a bit strange if he doesn’t have one. The directory of flutemakers lists no e-mail, but as we assumed here, it’s probably out of date. Just tought that someone here has been in contact with Mr. Murray.

I think he has one but prefers not to use it. In other words, don’t bother. Ring him or use snail mail.
