Price for a Murray flute

Hello dear,
Do you know what is the current price for a 6 key murray flute?
Thanks
Tommy

Try posting this question on the Flute Forum where it belongs, or use the search facility for contact details for Sam Murray - I’m sure someone posted his phone number not too long ago - and phone him and ask (he doesn’t have a website).

Isn’t THIS the flute forum?

'Twas moved from the Whistle forum originally. Mods have magical powers, y’know.

i think that claudine from this forum paid 1730 euros for boxwood version couple months ago.

1725, and it is a beautiful instrument

well, claudine, we ( or at least me) waiting for your extensive review of murray flute…
i played his flute yesterday, because i will order his flute very soon (at least i hope that i will be able to )…, and i found little thing that i found slightly unconfortable for me.
it is about lower block on long f natural key.it is situated very, very near e hole , so if you don’t cover e hole with tip of your fingers , that block couse that you are not able to seal that hole properly… do you have maybe problems with that?
i played some of his older flute ( 12 years old).
do you like also unlined head?

My flute (a keyless Blackwood) was supposed to be ready ship in mid August. I had paid the deposit some months ago and then sent Sam the balance.

Since then I have sent multiple emails and several snail mails with absolutely no response..

I wish you better luck than I have had.

Yes, e-mailing usually gets no response. Try giving him a call in the morning, around 11-ish Irish time. I was usually able to reach him then.

Chuck, the same thing had happened to me. Finally I got my flute a few months late, but he offered me a few gimmicks for free (silver rings, ivory cap and end) as a kind of compensation. So don’t panic. Try calling him on the phone.

Marin, i have no problems with that block. I used to play piper’s grip, but changed to classic grip when I got this flute. Maybe you should do the same (?).

I think I read somewhere that a Murray was 1400 Euro for a 5-keyed flute, but I am not positive.

I’ve had the same experience as Chuck. I ordered a flute in June 2008, and paid the full amount in about August (when Sam said he could make it). He phoned me in about October saying he’d had a problem with a batch of wood, but was about to get on with it, and he offered me something free for the delay. But since then I’ve received no flute & had no reply to my many emails, a letter, & leaving phone messages.
I’m still hopeful of getting a wonderful flute from him soon (and a friend who happens to be in Galway city next week is to call in on Sam !).
When I ordered my flute last June I did so in person, & found Sam to be a charming bloke. (Desi Wilkinson had recommended him to me). But it’s obviously very frustrating not knowing what is happening after paying the full cost 5 months ago.
I don’t mind waiting for hopefully a great flute, but I don’t think any flutemaker, however good, should treat customers like this.

I’ve been trying to get a murray for some time.
Finally, a few months ago, I bought one used.
It was out of internal tune, the second octave d was seriously flat,
but the flute had a lovely sound and I despaired of
getting another. I sent it to
a flutemaker who shortened
the footjoint, thereby bringing the note up to pitch.

Here it is in action. In the video I’m still figuring out how to play
it, and I’m having trouble with the new thumbhole. Apologies for
the mistakes. But maybe
folks who haven’t heard the murray will get an idea of what
it sounds like, at least in my hands.

This is me - a frustrated Murray orderer (if in fact this a real word).

Keyless - Ordered in May or June - deposit sent.

Final payment sent in August 2008 when he said it would be ready later in the month.

Many phone calls to “you’ve phoned someone”.

Many emails - probably one per week

Many snail mails - including a registered one.

NOTHING.

I am very upset.

Can anyone get to this guy and straighen out is business.

Chuck

I think we’ve established that in cases like this, describing one’s own experience, good or bad, is perfectly OK, while extrapolating from that experience is a grey area. I’ve lightly redacted the above post for caution’s sake, and people can use their own judgment.

Thanks, and carry on. - MTGuru/Mod

Well, I have to echo many of the experiences of others.
I spoke with Sam over the phone and he cheerfully told me he could have a keyless Flute ready for me in a matter of months… and would I go on and send him a deposit of I believe $200 or so. Three months later he called my cell phone( I live in North Carolina) and said the Flute would be ready in a matter of days and I could I go on and send him the balance. Well I did and needless to say it was a roller coaster of a ride before I actually got the Flute!
Now Sam is an affable enough Guy, I love talking him, but for whatever reason, its the devil of a time to get the actual Flute for many would be buyers.
My suggestions for working with a maker that consistently does this to his Customers would be this… $50 deposit, no more no less, cash on delivery as simple as that. If every single Customer did this for a Maker like this believe me it would change the dynamics very quickly and for the better.
Now don’t get me wrong, it would be a rare Flute maker that customers would need to do this with. Case in point, I’ve bought several Flutes from Terry McGee and to me he’s GOLD to work with, when Terry says you’ll get a Flute, you’ve got it and no sleepless nights.
Just my 2 cents worth…
Ben Shaffer

yes, terry is great to work with.

Sadly Chuck, we hear the same thing over and over again…

Glad to hear you are still out there, sorry to hear about this situation though. Comes up every year like clockwork I’m afraid.
