Piping tunes on....

I thought some of you might appreciate this. Here are a coupla sets of HPs & reels that I brought to my High School class. They’re played on nylon string guitar… ok, so yer saying " sure easy…!"

..not so fast there…

There are over twenty 14-18 yr olds playing in Unison!

have a listen. Included is the tune that I transcribed for Wally Charm’s “Piper’s Reveiw.” Both HPs (from Brophy and Ennis) are home recordings so these versions will be of interest as many have not heard these settings.

There are a good # of other clips of various classes/tunes under the same heading (Killian Irish Guitar)

Please, if you feel like going down the path of “this has nothing to do with piping” please consider the sources…If your knickers are still twisted, send me a private post

At very least, this is a first in ITM (for better or worse, depending on your perspective). I’ve heard other “ensembles” play arrangements, but the sources are dodgy and the arrangements usually lack in all things traditional, save the tune title.

best wishes, w/hopes the collective you will appreciate our hard work and good sounds.

ps. the kids who played this all live in Miami…and many are Latin American! Tis’ just amazing how well they got this music in their fingers. The clips (not listed in these links) that say “Guitar 1” include some kids how had only been playing 8 months! Check out their fierce gracenotes etc!

Very impressive…I learnt this set by ear quite a few years back…never imagined I’d see a zillion guitar players picking it out!

Wow!

think I’ll email Robbie and tell him to sneak a peek

I like this comment for the other video (Finbarr Dwyer’s):

WE FKIN ROCK THAT ST B**CH!

P.S - look at my sexy mohawk >:D

Somebody needs a time out, or more Ritalin. They still use Ritalin?

Cool sound! They’re using flatpicks it looks like. Wouldn’t Segovia whack you with his capo for doing that? You could arrange “regulators” to be played by part of the lineup, ya know. Maybe get a trio with some steel strings and eBows, and they could supply “drones”!

I was credited in the Pipers’ Review for supplying the Brophy recording. I got that from John Moran, “Seany” here. It was a concert featuring Jim and Sean Seery, I think, about 1986, showcasing a pair of little known, talented pipers.

Actually, some of them are using no pick, and in one of the clips (not the links) a kid uses only his thumb ala Wes Montgomery!

Boyd-

I would be honoured if you emailed Robbie! (check yer messages)

Kev-

I owe you big time! Thanks for everything!

ps everyone- there is a tune out of the Lewis Blevins book from Neillidh Mulligan that is one of the clips (search “Killian Irish Guitar” its one of those). Now that I think if it..perhaps both of them are from him…but Lew would have to confirm or deny that detail…

I wouldn’t have thought it would be easy to pick out notes on a guitar—I’ve tried that before . I enjoyed the videos a lot—I’ve never heard that many guitars being played at the same time. I think I watched all that were posted there. Tell your class they sounded really good!

Thank you Cynth

Kev:

Segovia…Capo…

LOL!

Thanks for the vid links Kynch, cool stuff.

Isn’t this a topic better suited for the Strings Forum or the Pub? Just a thought…

Well done-I like it!

good man Fel.!

well, perhaps Joe.. (I’ve never posted there to be honest)

I felt since the sources are pipers and since this forum is my terra firma (in a cyber sort of way) yous would enjoy…

thanks
