Recording yourself is a great way of identifying things you’d like to improve that you might otherwise not notice while you’re playing. I definitely have a different ear when I’m playing than when I’m listening.
I just searched soundcloud and am still looking through so I’ll post again if I find anything cool
How does this happen? Preston Howard is in Maine, yet I don’t remember ever seeing him at a tionol, or even hearing his name. Who was his teacher I wonder? Where is he from? What lovely playing.
Brad Angus is the maker of his D set. I believe the B set was borrowed from another piper in Portland, which I think was made by Geoff Wooff!?
Preston is a fantastic piper and musician, and plays with great flair, style, and passion. He is definitely someone that needs to make a solo album in the future!
Preston and friends have a band, Na Rósaí, with a CD out now, or out soon, it looks. Very talented kids. Portland is the “Rose City” in case you’re wondering what the name means. They used to play at the East Burn, down the block from Preston’s digs; I razzed them for a couple of years about their lack of a name. “PDX Celidh Band? Preston and Pals? Come on, anything!” I should order a copy of their record as I’m busy playing diddley music on Tuesday evenings which is when their weekly gig is as well and probably won’t catch them in the flesh any time soon…although Preston will be at the Seattle tionol next month, too. Assuming his school bus doesn’t crap out.
